money

by keirant

Im travelling in june but desperatly need to pay of the credit card before i go, so just wanting to know approx how much money will i need to take. Im staying with a friend so accomidation is no cost, and travel will be by my friend. So how much just to eat out a few times and go to nice places, sight see and go to the night clubs. If u could tell me in AUD would be great.

Drinks on a night out will be costing around £3 bottle, ie smirnoff ice, bottle of beer. Giving you a price in AUD will be hard, as it depends on how wild you go on a night out(drink wise). Days out depend on where you are going, and food is probably going to set you back £5 upwards in a pub.

Newcastle for FREE:
The cathedral (lots of fascinating historical details inside)
The Baltic contemporary arts gallery (always changing displays)
Laing art gallery (for fine art)
The university museums (natural history, ancient artefacts, all sorts)
A walk around the fantastic quayside! Newcastle is probably England's most beatiful big city, dramatically straddling the Tyne. Watch the blinking eye bridge, look into the Sage Centre concert hall and just soak up the views, it really is incredible.

Newcastle on the cheap:
The castle (a couple pounds to get in, it has great views from the top)
Bessie Surtees House (lovely ancient timber house, about a quid)
Tynemouth Abbey (a couple quid to visit, the ruins overlook the open sea and face a lighthouse)

And make sure your friend takes you to Durham for the day, the cathedral is awesome and a walk around it along the river is lovely. Happy travels!

Ask your friend to make you a member of Aspers casino. Free membership and entertainment. It is at 'The Gate' in Newcastle which is an entertainment complex with cinema, etc. Has several eating options. Haven't been myself (I am a bit old!) but have heard it is good.

A good currency conversion site is www/xe/com/ucc/

Travel Tips for Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne Tip

by Galahad

Walking upto Eldon Square and Eldon Gardens in the rain on the first trip! From the railway station cross the road and turn slightly to your right and walk up Grainger Street. Eventually you will come to Grainger Market on the left. I had not appriciated all that there is to see about this building until after I got home and read up about it. It was opened in 1835 and is a Grade 1 listed building. It is very typical of many north of England Market Halls that I know. There are 180 stalls - 104 of which have now been restored. I didn't see it, but the Market still contains the world's smallest branch of the UK department (?) store, Marks and Spencers. Pity no one had mentioned it before.

The "New Castle"

by steventilly

The Castle Keep - the 'New Castle' from which the city takes it's name. Built in 1080 of wood, it was rebuilt in stone around 1168. Most of the castle complex was dismantled in 1809 and all that remains is the keep and the Black Gate, which are now disected by the railway!

Inside the keep are two royal suites, and the views from the battlements down over the Tyne are spectacular.

Sid the Sexist, Biffa Bacon, the fat slags & co

by sourbugger

Viz is an 'adult' comic that still sells about 100,000 copies on each issue, and you can buy a copy at most newsagents in the UK.

It began about 20 years ago in Newcastle as a few badly photocopied sheets produced from a student bedsit. The humour is definetely on the purile / chilish / disgusting side / schoolboy type / knob gag / toliet humour level - and what's wrong with that ?

Many of the strips feature characters that are firmly set in Newcastle and speak pure Geordie. Good examples include Biffa Bacon, Sid the Sexist and the Fat Slags.

Buy a copy before you go, and you just might get a flavour of Geordie humour !

Hadrians Wall

by TheGaz1982

Hadrians Wall Stretching 73 miles from Wallsend on River Tyne to the Solway Firth. Began in AD122 after the Emperor Hadrian's visit to Britain, at a time when the Roman Empire was at its height. Construction took only 6 years by legionaries of the Roman Army. Standing up to 5 m high with milecastles at every mile, and between each milecastle two turrets. Great forts such as Housesteads, all protected by a series of ditches and banks known as the Vallum. Today one can explore the wall using the 81 mile long-distance National Trail. Popular with hikers on a Hadrians Wall Walking holiday and day visitors a like. Most people probably do not realise that part of the wall runs near Newcastle, and so they miss it!

St Mary's lighthouse, Whitley...

by MartinR

St Mary's lighthouse, Whitley Bay. A not unpleasant place to spend a few moments. You can climb the lighthouse. The lighthouse gets cut off from the mainland for a few hours each day at high tide, and they do not let you enter the lighthouse from about 1 hour before the cut off time.
