Watching the world cup

by timdj

I'm in Newcastle with the boys this weekend for the first England match of the world cup,is there any big screens outside being set up ?. If not where is the best place to watch it for the atmosphere?

Answering this from Russia so can't be sure but other big matches have been shown on a giant screen in Times Square which is next to the Centre for Life and close to the Central Station. Also a new sports bar on the corner of Westgate Road and Grainger Street which is huge. Otherwise other likely spots which will have a good atmosphere will be Shearers Bar which is part of St James PArk or bars in the Bigg Market (City Vaults, Old George)
Send our love to The Toon!

Travel Tips for Newcastle upon Tyne

Take in all the pubs from next...

by AliPatti

Take in all the pubs from next to the swing bridge, walking along the quayside towards the East. Don't bother trying to visit every one (but try Bob Trollops and the Redhouse serve vegetarian food in very interesting setting), but aim to end up at the Tyne and the Free Trade. The Free Trade sells nice beer and has the most spectacular view back along the route you just walked, up river and takes in all the bridges across the tyne. Particularly beautiful at the end of the day. This is a non-arduous walk for lovers of beer or river views! Everyone's fondest memory while away from Newcastle is the river crossing - The Tyne Bridge. If you're driving home, this is the ONLY route to take! If you're on the train coming north, you must sit to the right hand side of the carriage to see this bridge on your way over. Some say Sydney Harbour Bridge is better but I doubt any Geordie would agree!

St. John the Baptist

by steventilly

The Church Of St. John the Baptist, at the bottom of Grainger Street. It is one of the oldest churches in the city, from the reign of Edward I and has been fortunate to survive the redevelopment of the city in the early 1800's.

Geordie Accent

by barryg23

The winger on our football team in college was from Newcastle and I remember how difficult it was to understand him sometimes as he had a strong Geordie accent. However, when I visited Newcastle I had no trouble with the accent, I guess I’ve got used to UK accents in the last few years. For first time visitors it might be more difficult.

Hadrian's Wall

by clairegeordio

Hadrian's wall is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It was ordered to be built by the emperor Hadrian in 122 A.D when he decided that the empire needed securing. When it was completed it was 73 miles long from Wallsend-on-Tyne in the East to Bowness-on-Solway in the West. Every mile along the wall were 'milecastle' gates defended by a guard post and two observation turrets were placed between each pair of milecastles. In addition there were also several larger forts along the wall holding 500-1000 troops.
There are many different sites to be visited along the wall such as Housesteads Roman Fort which contains the only visible example of a Roman hospital in Britain.
Hadrian's wall begins at Segedunum Fort, the most easterly outpost, on the banks of the River Tyne at Wallsend, which then carries on to Heddon-On-The-Wall. To see impressive Roman forts along the wall, I would suggest a visit to Chester Fort and then to Housesteads fort, about an hour's drive from Newcastle.

the Trincomalee

by margaretvn

Visit the Trincomalee at the Historic Quay in Hartlepool. The Trincomalee is the last of Nelson's frigates.
This sailing frigate was built of teak in 1817 in India. She sailed the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. She is the oldest ship alfoat in the U.K. The ship has been restored but over 60% is still original. She was actually based at Hartlepool from 1862 - 1877.
