A good night's sleep

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on October 27, 2014

We got a good deal for this upmarket (for us) hotel on booking.com and decided that the little extra it was going to cost on a weekend visit to Newcastle might be worthwhile if it attracted fewer "stags and hens" than is the norm in the city's budget and mid-range hotels. And so it proved. We slept well both nights and only once heard anyone outside in the corridor.

I imagine that the best rooms here enjoy excellent views of the city and the Tyne from its vantage point on the hill above the river, but our room was quite dark and overlooked only another wing of the building. It was a good size however, and had all the facilities we needed - a large, comfortable bed; a wide screen TV; en suite bathroom with good shower (though a shame in such a nice hotel that they couldn't run to a shower curtain of sufficient weight not to flap around and cling to anyone showering!), generously sized towels and a selection of toiletries; tea and coffee making facilities; minibar (not used, but prices seemed not too bad); hair dryer.

Breakfast costs an extra £10 so we gave this a miss and ate in local cafés instead. We also didn't use the bar, which seemed very welcome and cosy but probably expensive compared with prices in the pubs (with one of our favourite of the latter, the Bridge, being immediately opposite the hotel). We did notice that their afternoon tea seemed very popular on the couple of times we walked through while this was being served.

My main quibble was the excessive heat in the bedroom which persisted even when the thermostat was turned down to zero. We mentioned this at reception and they said they would check it, but we didn't notice much improvement. As we were only staying two nights we just put up with it, but for a longer stay I might have requested a change of room. Generally though we were very pleased with our stay and if we can get a similar deal in the future would certainly come back.

Directions: About five minutes’ walk from the Central Station – see map and directions on the hotel’s website
