Getting to Stratford-upon-Avon

by Yuna_11

Hi, does anyone know how to get from the Warwick Castle to Stratford-upon-Avon? I know they are just about 8 miles away but does anyone know if there's a local bus that runs btw the two places? Thanks so much!

Hiya for bus info you could try : www.stagecoachbus.com or www.travelwm.co.uk they are both local bus services and should give you online timetables and a number you can phone for enquiries.

Gower Memorial (Shakespeare)

by yooperprof

The Gower Memorial (to the Bard) is in Bancroft Gardens, right on the Avon. Lord Ronald Gower, a late 19th century aristocrat and amateur sculptor (and friend of Oscar Wilde), was commissioned by Stratford's town fathers to create a sculpural group commemorating the Bard.

The importance of the Shakespearian bed!

by Jenniflower

There is a bit of a 'ho-ha' when people hear that Shakespeare left his wife Anne the guest bed in his will. One would think 'what?, didn't he love her or something? Why only the bed?.'

Well actually, in those days, this was the grandest thing to leave a loved one in one's will, and seen to be highly romantic too!

The guest bed was the BEST bed in the house. People judged your wealth and status by what your beds were like, and your guest bed, usually located in the parlour (the best room in the house), was always the best, mum and dad then having the second best bed and then so on.

Hence Anne getting the guest bed. He could not have, in those days, have left her anything more desirable!

I always wondered why the beds were so short in length. Were they shorter back then? Nope. They used to sleep sitting up, not lying down, for superstitious reasons!

All fascinating stuff!

Shottery & Wilmcote

There are two near by out of Stratford-upon-Avon Shakespeare sites -- Anne Hathaway's Cottage, and Mary Arden's House and the Shakespeare Countryside Museum. I have these sites listed under their respective towns.

How can you not want to eat here? :)

by Jenniflower about The Food of Love

If you are feeling like a light snack, and a good quality one at that, then this is the place to come!

Conveniently situated practically across the road from Shakepeare's birthplace, which has tens of thousands of visitors visiting it, it is a busy little cafe, that seems to touch the spot.

We only had a coffee, but their pastries did look absolutely delicious!

We also love the name of course. So Shakesperian, as quite a few places are in this town!

In Portugal we use to say that "one image speaks more than 1000 words". Having that in mind, and more than 1000 pictures to post, I decided to change my behaviour, posting the pictures as soon as they are ready, and adding the comments later.
Don't get mad on me - I'm glad to share my pictures with you, and the comments will be added soon.
