The American Clock Tower
by Jenniflower
Some people love it. Some dislike it!
The Clock Tower stands just off Rother Street, in the market area. It was given to the town by an American, George W. Childs of Philadelphia, hence it being referred to as the 'American Fountain' by locals.
It is built in the Victorian Gothic style, with two American eagles on two corners and two English lions on the other two corners, reminiscent of the relationship between the States and England.
There is a fairy from Midsummer Night's Dream above each clock face if you look closely...
Horses used to drink form the water trough found at the bottom of the fountain, but it is now filled with flowers, as seen in the photograph.
It is quite nice I think, not at all garish, unlike what some locals may think :)
Packing for Stratford
by DUNK67
A camera and loads of films are essential for this very picturesque town. There are so many beautiful buildings to photograph in Stratford on Avon and the surrounding area. Films are readily available all over town.
Harvard House
by tvor
John Harvard, a London Puritan, emigrated to the New World but died in 1638. He bequeathed his extensive law library and half of his estate towards building a college which later became Harvard College (University). Harvard House in Stratford belonged to John Harvard's mother and is a wonderful example of an elaborately half timbered town house.
It now houses the museum of British Pewter and contains artifacts back as early as Roman times.
It fills the gap!
by Jenniflower about The Cottage Tea Garden
There is a lovely tea garden across the road from Anne Hathaway’s Cottage where you can enjoy a good cup of tea and delicious homemade scones.
There is a river running through the property with ducks and a couple geese - this area is called Shottery Brook Walk.
It is quite nice to come here after spending some time viewing the cottage, and whilst waiting for the bus (sightseeing bus), which will then take you on to Mary Arden’s House (Anne Hathaway’s mum’s farmhouse).
You can sit inside or out, either is nice. They cook light lunches, home-baked cakes, cream teas (which we didnt have, having had one the day before... but they did look delicious!) and snacky food.
Hall's Croft

This attactive historic site is not far from the Holy Trinity Church and is within easy walking distance to the other sites in town. This was the home of Shakespeare's oldest daughter and is maintained by the Shakespeare Trust. There are a couple of ways to save money on admission. Get the Great Britain Heritage Pass if you are visiting several sites around the country. Also, if you plan on visiting most of the Shakespeare sites, it would be cheaper to get a combination ticket. Those who are interested in medical practices on the 17th century will also appreciate a look in the house.
