Beautiful hotel

Idealic surroundings with good service, good standards and very close to the centre without being loud.

Unique Quality: On the banks of the River Avon directly across from the RSC theatres make this a great place for that quite, maybe romantic weekend break. Parking is available so leave that car and walk into stratford itself, its about a 5 min walk. Enjoy it, I did.

More about Macdonald Swan's Nest Hotel

Really lovely stay

by TripAdvisor Member chloeLeicestershire

We have just stayed at this hotel as a last minute deal and had a wonderful stay. We were upgraded to a lovely roon, treated like royalty and had the "breakfast from heaven". Honestly the people who have given this hotel bad reviews must be extreemly fussy. The staff were great (thanks Michael the barman for having us in fits of laughing). We ate at the Thai resteruant opposite the hotel and it was fabulous all round a brilliant stay. Book it.

Pretty poor in most respets

by TripAdvisor Member UK_Lab_5105

This hotel was pretty poor in most respects:

The corridors were very dingy and many of the signs were defaced and damaged. The room, including the bathroom, too was ill-lit and dingy and felt like it needed a makeover. The room was small as well. The corridors also contained the laundary bins and there was no attempt to hide these from the customers' view.

Breakfast was a lacklustre affair -- very greasy english breakfast and a pretty pathetic continental selection. The cooked food was served rather than buffet-style but one gets the impression that that is merely in order to ration portions rather than because of any customer service imperative. Also there was rather a long wait to have our order taken after having taken a seat ourselves (there was no indication as to whether to do that or wait to be seated).

Some good things : free still and sparkling water in the room in common with other Macdonald hotels. Leisure facilites are available but only in the sister hotel on the other side of the road.

The location is pretty good for central Stratford and the setting beside the canal is rather pleasent but unfortunately there is no real way of taking advantage of it within the hotel setting.

The staff member who welcomed us at reception was friendly and helpful, if slightly robotic.

Overall, not a wonderful hotel. Not bad as a convenient and cheap (?) place for a night or two, but definately not somewhere for a nice stay.

Ordinary Room, Nice Breakfast and Staff

by TripAdvisor Member SugarDutchie

Another typical Macdonald hotel that is run down and in dire need of some money spent on it to bring it into the future. I spent 1 night here for work and unfortunately had no choice in where I had to sleep.
The hotel is in a great location in the middle of a wonderful village town that offers plenty for everyone of all ages however it is a dissapointing stay here in a hotel that looks like it hasn't been upgraded since the late 60's. The room itself was very dinghy, musty smelling, small and the tv channels and reception are a joke. The bathroom whislt clean is also small and dinghy and nearly makes you sick lookng at the poor decor. The bed was dirty and the duvet had some strange looking stains on them which put me off even more.
I would however say that breakfast was very nice although I was the first customer. There is plenty of different food to choose from and all very fresh. I also found the staff to be very friendly thankfully as withouth them this place would be hell!

great location lovely staff

I have just returned from a weekend at this hotel and I can’t really fault it. Last year I stayed at their sister hotel the Alverston Manor which was much more expensive but I can’t say it was better than the Swans Nest. The Alverston Manor has the leisure facilities in that they have the spa but as a guest at the Swans Nest you can walk across the road and use the Spa for free. On arrival at the Swans Nest we were greeted by a friendly smile from the hotel receptionist and were quickly and efficiently booked in. Our room on the ground floor was nicely decorated, spotless and had a comfy bed. It had a lovely view of the gardens and the RSC main theatre beyond and the complimentary bottles of water were welcome. Ok the TV was old and only had 6 channels but I didn't go to Stratford to sit in my hotel room and watch TV so it wasn't a problem for me. The bathroom although small was clean and functional with a nice art deco feel. One suggestion Macdonald’s, install an extractor fan the bathroom got very steamy and it was ages before we could see in the mirror but the shower was hot and powerful. The hotel is in a very convenient location, by walking through the gardens you don’t have to cross any busy roads to get into the heart of town just a one minute stroll away. The next morning we went in late for breakfast to avoid the rush, I believe that at peek times occasionally you have to wait for a free table, although they have tried to alleviate this by providing coffee and Danish pastries to enjoy in the foyer while you wait. The breakfast, served in the Riverview terrace room was good. There was plenty of choice and again the staff were lovely. All in all a very pleasant stay. My only minor complaint was the high price in the bar, £13.50 for two glasses of wine seemed a little excessive. The Swans Nest is in a good location with free parking nice views and great staff I would recommend it to anyone and I would certainly stay here again.

Tired!

by TripAdvisor Member 911SC

One word. Tired!

Met with friends and this hotel was chosen mainly due to availability.

Good location near the town centre and the bonus of free parking. However, this is a very old fashioned hotel which hasnt changed since it was build in the 70s. Torrential rain didnt help the damp smells in the common areas (and neither did the air-freshener being used copiously by the receptionist!)

The room was very small and the bath-roon far from luxurious but it was clean. Staff were pleasant and breakfast was actually very good.

I beleive that the hotel over the road is owned by the same group (shared use of "spa" facilities was offered) and I wonder if this one is seen as an overflow alternative rather than a destination in its own right!

A wonderful stay

by TripAdvisor Member BJlondon

A very good choice- We went to this hotel for our wedding anniversary and the reviews we read were mixed. We need not have worried. The hotel is easy to find, clean, bright and perfectly placed. Our room was lovely and sunny and quite large. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent. A wonderful stay in a very lovely town.

No major problems despite floods the previous week!

by TripAdvisor Member jaybil

We booked this hotel via Superbreak.com, having been given some of their holiday vouchers for a Christmas present. Stratford had been flooded the week before we arrived and we were expecting a few problems. The Swan's Nest's cellars had been affected, resulting in them being unable to serve draught beers etc. and there was a smell in one corridor which was obviously caused by stagnant water from the cellar. Despite this, however, there were no major problems. We had stayed at the Swan's Nest's sister hotel, Alveston Manor a few years earlier and thought that the rooms there were due for refurbishment. Similarly, our room at the Swan's Nest was clean and comfortable but needed freshening up. There was a cupboard which housed the tea/coffee making facilities and on which the TV stood. It had burn marks on it and brown stains which couldn't be wiped off. The carpet was a dingy grey colour and there was a tear in the lace curtains. On the plus side, the bathroom was spotlessly clean, but the heated towel rail couldn't be regulated or switched off. This made the bathrrom unbearably hot, so my husband took out the fuse and replaced it to dry the towels whilst we were out of the room!
Breakfast was very good, though one morning we did have to wait rather longer than expected for cooked food. The dining room staff were very polite and helpful, but the hotel's receptionist had no idea about local bus routes when we asked how to get to Warwick by bus. Surely in this day and age hotel staff , whatever their nationality, should be able to give you basic information about the area!
Despite these niggly comments, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Swan's Nest and in Stratford upon Avon generally.

Reasonable hotel, good location

by TripAdvisor Member Padfink

Someone else booked us into this hotel because we needed to stay in Stratford-Upon-Avon for one night.

The positives:
1. The hotel is very central (5 minute walk from all of the main attractions).
2. The room and ensuite were a good size and very clean
3. The breakfast was extensive and very pleasant and runs til 10.30am which is nice.
4. The staff were very helpful.
5. We had asked for a quiet room and that is what they provided.
6. The hotel provides free parking for it's guests which is central and makes accessing both stratford and the surrounding areas very easy.
7. The rooms were a pleasant temperature (not stuffy) and the curtains kept the light out.

The slight negatives:
1. The room we were given used to be a smokers room so it smelt of old, stale cigarettes which was a shame.
2. If you are expecting a beautiful hotel you will be disappointed. The pictures they show in the brochures are of the front facade which is the old section of the hotel but most of the rooms and facilities are in a 1970's style block out the back.

Other info:
You can use the sister hotel's facilities (across the road) which includes a pool, gym and sauna.

Would I stay there again:
Yes. Not for a romantic break though. It's a functional hotel (and it does that really well).

Very friendly staff!

by TripAdvisor Member wrinklypeep

We have just returned from a fantastic stay at the Swan's Nest. Firstly the location is excellent, next to the river, and a very short walk through the park to the town. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was good. All our requests were dealt with quickly and politely by staff, (we even asked for a ice bucket to chill our own bottle of wine, this was put in our room for us while we were shopping! They even offered us glasses!). The communal areas are comfortable with complementary tea/coffee and cakes. Breakfast was very good, with a huge choice of food and drinks much of which were organic or free range. The swimming pool over the road at the sister hotel (free for Swan's Nest guests) is lovely and only a short walk away. Overall the Swan’s Nest is good value for money, clean with nice friendly staff, and good facilities. Highly recommended!
