More about Menzies Welcombe Hotel & Golf Course Stratford-upon-Avon

A beautiful hotel

by TripAdvisor Member NomadPrincess

My husband and I stayed at the Welcombe hotel for one night in November 2006.

We arrived late in the evening, whilst it was pouring in rain and were pleased to be greeted by friendly faces and a welcoming atmosphere.

The lounge area with fireplace is lovely and they even upgraded our room to a suite free of charge (definitely the sort of thing you need after a 3 hour drive in bad traffic!)

The room was at the front of the main building and was huge! We had a great big bedroom, separate dressing room and very large bathroom with his and her sinks. The bathroom was very modern, clean and well presented and the decor in the bedroom area was old fashioned (by that I mean in keeping with the surroundings) but charming and full of character.

The reception staff were very helpful. They gave us a full list of recommended restaurants in Stratford and it is only a 5 minute drive away. You could walk but it would probably take you a good 15-30 minutes one way.

The bar area was nice and again the staff couldn't be more helpful.

We went into the spa and were lucky enough to have it to ourselves (as it was 8pm on a week night). They have a good size swimming pool for a hotel, jacuzzi, gym, sauna, steam rooms and I was impressed by the quality and standard of the changing areas and liked the swim suit dryer facility - good little touch that.

We had breakfast in the main dining room in the morning over looking the extensive grounds. They are very well kept and it is a lovely view. We even had the privilege of witnessing another guest leaving in his helicopter from the lawn.

As we were attending a business function at the hotel we also enjoyed a three course lunch with our colleagues. There were approx. 15 of us in total and the standard of the food they served was all very good.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at Welcombe and I would definitely recommend this hotel for both a relaxing stay or a business function.

A comedy of errors

by TripAdvisor Member Lorrayne G

I am a returning customer to the Welcombe Hotel, having stayed there a couple of years ago - just after Menzies purchased the hotel but before they had started their renovations. We absolutely loved the hotel and the service and could not wait to go back again for our wedding anniversary to celebrate and see the results of their renovation programme and try the new spa that has just opened. We returned yesterday from 2 nights (May 20th & May 21st) at the hotel.

Oh, where do I start. The service this time was terrible. However, I truly believe that this was down to very poor training of the staff - they just didn't know how to do their job properly. The staff are (mostly) very very nice, but they are very young and clearly need more training and experience. I am so disappointed, the hotel makes much of the renovations that have been made to the hotel (rooms updated and the spa opened) but this doesn't really help if the service that is expected from a 4 star hotel fails to meet expectations. Apart from an elderly doorman, I did not see one member of staff that was older than 25 or so. That in itself is not a problem if they can do a good job, but many of these staff seemed to be very new and very inexperienced - maybe they had just broken up for summer and are starting a few months work - but if so, they need to ensure that there are more experienced staff working alongside the inexperienced staff.

Here are just a few snippets of the problems that we encountered at the hotel..

a) Afternoon Tea - Ordered in the lounge. Got the tea, got the jam - waitedt 15 minutes for the scone to show up and when we followed it up we were told that it was on it's way by the guy that appeared to be in charge (because he didn't appear to be doing very much except watching the chaos). A large conference group had just turned up for their afternoon tea and we had been forgotten about half way through the delivery as we watched the service staff get themselves into a spin rushing around the newly arrived group - completely forgetting the customers who were already there and waiting to be served. We got the missing scones 30minutes after we got the tea and the jam - no sign of the cream. When we tried to tell the waitress that it was too late, she misunderstood and simply tried to give the scones to someone else. We called her back to explain that the scones were ours, but as the tea had been drunk or it would have been cold - the scone was now not wanted. Waitress still didn't seem to grasp the fact that we weren't terribly happy and simply shrugged and took it away again. So, in the end we went to reception and advised that we didn't want to pay for a cream tea on our final bill as all we had been served was a cup of tea.

b) Dinner reservation - We booked a table in the restaurant for 2 for 8pm from our room. No one told the restaurant. We waited in the bar (as everyone does) until 8.30pm before wandering up to the restaurant where the manageress apologised as no one had told her. We had been concerned at 8.15pm when we saw people who had arrived after us being shown through, and asked the bar staff to follow up - they came back with the menus so that we could start to choose our order, but still neglected to tell the actual restaurant staff

c) Room Service - Ordered breakfast in bed and morning papers. No papers arrived and my order was wrong. 4 separate items either missing or added.

d) Phone in room - Wasn't working. Called reception from my mobile to book the restaurant (the message didn't get to the restaurant) and advised at that time that the phone wasn't working. No one ever arrived to fix it. When we checked out and mentioned again that it wasn't working, we were asked if we had reported it.

e) Spa - Went to the spa to book a massage for the Sunday. We were offered a 6.30pm booking. Turned up at 6.30pm and the treatment centre was closed, the receptionist there was perplexed as the treatment centre closes at 5pm on Sundays. He had no knowledge of our booking.

f) Bar - Ordered a Tom Collins. 10 minutes later the very embarrased barman admitted that he had no idea how to make it. I didn't know what was in it so changed my order to a Gin & Tonic.

g) Internet access - For a 4 star hotel that caters for business & leisure, there is no internet access of any kind in the bedroom. Reception advised that the bar and lounge were BT openzone hot spots and needed a card. 48hours for £10 or 1hour for £6. They had run out of the 48hour cards and would not be getting any more in for a week. Couldn't suggest an alternative, so I had to advise her that I could purchase BT cards online by visiting the URL from the hotspot area.

h) Check out - We were asked if anything was wrong with our room on checkout, we said that overall the room was fine apart from the phone (which was when we were asked if we had reported it) but when we said that we had experienced some customer service issues, she had no idea what to do and just gave us our bill! There was no offer to fetch a duty manager or anything.

Away from the bustle

by TripAdvisor Member MayralBoyleFamily

We decided to go north from London with our 18 month old and 4 year old at the last minute last Saturday. We went on line and got a great deal at Menzies Welcombe and loved the idea of it having a spa and golf course. As soon as we arrived we like it. It is on a bushy, green private road off of the highway. The golfers cross the road and there are squirrill crossing signs. I don't know the history of the building well, but it is a large red brick country type home from hundreds of years ago. It has a gorgeous facade and various additions tastefully built on to it. The parking is gated and very safe. There was not a lot of staff to help out on arrival, but to be honest, we were fine on our own and those kind of bells and whistles don't really appeal to us anyway. The check in was easy and quick. The decor in the common areas is appropriate to the old English country house with big sofas and chairs, fireplaces...etc. There is a bar and a restaurant where we got our best view of the back. It is amazing! A sloping, sculptured garden is below...beyond is the 18 hole, par 71 golf course and a man made river flowing down the hill (the sound is very settling) and into the garden. The room was very nice and up to 4 stars. I wouldn't rave about anything in particular, but everything was new and clean. We went to the spa later (included in the price of the room) and loved it. Children are welcome between certain hours, so we all went for a swim and I went for a steam and sauna later. The spa is brand new and GREAT. The prices for treatments is reasonable. Guests can play at the golf course, so my husband was up at the crack of dawn and back as we were packing up. We're still dreaming about it...perfect break away from the bustle...restful, gorgeous...there when you need it. The cappucino was great in the AM too...there was an attractive breakfast buffet, but we weren't up for so much food.

Great location and building - staff not so great

by TripAdvisor Member Mstoast

The hotel is in a great location, and the golf course is superb!
Did not use the spa facilities, but these also looked excellent.
Our room was close to the function room in the hotel so it was a bit noisy. When we asked to move, the receptionist said no, but when the duty manager came down, he really did try to sort something out.
The receptionist was also rude to another guest.
Bar staff were exceptionally slow.
Very few ladies loos as well!
Room was ok - a bit tired in places.
Breakfast was not great - we were put into another room as part of a wedding party - except we weren't even with them! Bit odd sitting at round tables of 10 with complete strangers! We also had to ask for tea and toast.
All in all, great location, great building, the staff and slow service lets this place down.

Great golf

by TripAdvisor Member FHWNPW

My husband and I stayed here between 13th-16th September. We booked a golf break and the golf course is wonderful.

We had 2 weddings and 2 functions over our 4 day stay. The bar becomes crowded and the service is slow and don't even bother with room service as it took us over an hour to get 2 drinks. On one evening we couldn't even eat in the restaurant and had to eat in an awful musty smelling room.

The breakfast was great but we did not enjoy the food for dinner . Do NOT order the seared tuna it's absolutely disgusting, my husband made this mistake and could only eat a mouthful. The next evening 2 other diners ordered the tuna and both sent it back.

Our room was small and overlooked a bottle bank which the staff liked to fill early in the morning. The bed was comfy and the bathroom clean and tidy.

Go for the golf and spa but give the hotel a miss although the foreigh receptionist was very pleasant

searching for shop visited in summer

by jillepep

Opposite the shakespeares birthplace heading back in direction of town we looked in a small jewellry shop selling pretty handmade jewellery. Can anyone tell me the name as I wanted to phone and order something. I've searched online but no luck. Thankyou

I can find Jago (50), the Jewelleryshop (54) and Stratford Town Jewellers (58) on Henley Stret.

If you put 'stratford on avon jewellery shops' into google maps you'll get photos of frontages (not Jago), which will help, as well as addresses etc.

Brilliant! Thanks.Seems confusing as web address is'the jewellery stop'. Definately the place. We stayed outside town in the express holiday inn at Redditch. Amazing price as 4 share a room with free breakfast for just £39. Meals lovely too and not too pricey. Room was huge and hotel better than 5 star. Highly recommend it.
