In desperate need of a hotel!

by clarecas

Hi I was just wandering if anyone could help me. I'm a student and I'm travelling with a friend to stratford for three nights and are looking for cheap accomodation preferably not too far from the town centre. Unfortunately everything I've found is way above our budget, do you have any suggestion of hotels/hostels?or sites that can be helpful?
Thanks very much,
clare

The Youth Hostel nearby is your best bet, though it's not actually in Stratford itself. There is a bus (77), and Stratford station is about 2.5 miles away. It's the only hostel in Stratford, btw.

Failing that, you'll have to trawl through the B&bs listed online for the best price. Stratford, being a major tourist draw, is not an area which provides much in the way of cheap accommodation.

Hi

I can confirm the comments already made. Stratford is one of the most tourist visited places in the UK outside London and as such the accommodation prices reflect that.

I host business people from time to time in the area and find the most cost effective way is to host them in places outside Stratford but then you need transport to get in and out. Alternatively look to places such as Warwick or Leamington where there is a larger choice of accommodation and then catch the train to Stratford. Train fair is £3-80 for a cheap day return. http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk

Otherwise I am afraid you have to bite the bullet and pay the going rate in Stratford. Please note that during the summer finding a place at all can be difficult as accommodation becomes fully booked very quickly

last time I've been to Stratford, I've stayed at Salford Hall.

It is really grand old building and I think they have a 2 for 3 deal going on. The only problem is that it's about 6 miles away from town centre so if you don't have a car you are in trouble :)

Travel Tips for Stratford-upon-Avon

Sight seeing.

by Steve-H

The Bulldog Bash takes place every August at the York Raceway, Long Marston just a few miles past Stratford Upon Avon. Stratford is worth a visit, famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare it isnt as tacky as most tourist traps and has plenty of good pubs too.
Here i am with Trish the singer with the Playgirls outside Shakespeares house, he wasn`t in.

Personal ads ;)

We saw this little note on a shop door and had a chuckle!

They are looking to mate their dog with another and have thus posted this advert! It is located on a window of a fishing and gun shop.

This type of thing I thoroughly enjoy, the little quirky things that individualistic towns offer. Something small and seemingly insignificat, but something I will always remember :)

I wonder if the ad has been answered yet?

If you've a few crumbs left...

by Rachael71

If you've a few crumbs left from your picnic, then some of the hungriest - or just plain greediest? - birds I've ever seen reside on the canals in Stratford. Have fun!

As well as the swans and ducks, the canals are home to a number of narrow boats. Some are private, whilst others serve as restaurants, pleasure cruisers and even art shops. It's well worth a potter around this area.

Wellesbourne Watermill

by Watsoncomper

In my local village its watermill has been expertly restored and is worthwhile visit.

The mill is mentioned the Doomsday Book of 1086 as one of three situated near Wellesbourne. It has had a colourful history and was still working in the early 1900’s

The mill was completely restored in 1990 and received a Conservation award from the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings

The mill is now fully functional and sells its own flour. There are daily demonstrations of the mill working.

When Shakespeare was a wee baby

by Voyageuse30

Shakespeare's birthplace, 1564. Did you know that Shakespeare was born and died on the same day? Years later, of course. :-)

The house is decorated with period furniture and guides give good information on the house and it's history. It's very interesting to walk through it, it's such a charming rustic little place.

You get a real sense of what it must have been like to live back then. The knowledge that Shakespeare was born here just adds to it even more.

In the room where Shakespeare was born, you can see signatures scratched on the window- Sir Walter Scott, Thomas Carlyle, and other visitors- some of the more distinguished tourists of the past.

There are great gardens here too, and a gift shop for souvenirs.
