Travel Tips for Stratford-upon-Avon

Swan Fountain

by Jenniflower

When we were walking in Bancroft Gardens, we came across this rather interesting looking fountain!

In a rather traditional setting, finding this modern reflective piece of artwork is out of place, yet seems to sit perfectly here too :)

Christine Lee sculpted it and it was unveiled by the Queen in 1996.

It stand in front of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and is in celebration of 800 years of history in Stratford-on-Avon.

For a traditionally conservative town, this fountain lends a delightful contemporary flavour!

Stratford Thatch

by Jenniflower

One might think that many places in Stratford-upon-Avon have thatch because when one thinks of this town, you think immediately of Anne Hathaway's Cottage, which has stunning thatch on it!

But this is not the case.

There is only ONE remaining building, the Old Thatch Tavern, in the town with thatch, and afew houses scattered here and there on the outskirts of the town, one of them being Anne Hathaway's Cottage.

The designs on the roofs are intricate and delicate, yet have a certain 'bulk' to them, if that makes sense? The thatch roofs are often quite detailed and an artwork in themselves. Very pleasing to the eye!

There is plenty of bird-proofing going on to preserve the thatch and architecture from ruin.

Blenheim Palace

by ophiro

Blenheim Palace is a huge place , a big building with a lot of gardens.

A lot of people come to see the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and the home of the 11th Duke of Marlborough.

It was on our way from Stratford-upon-avon to Oxford.

To my opinion it is a must-see-activity but since it is not in Stratord i called it off-the-beaten-path tip.

Disappointed at this pub!

by Jenniflower about The Black Swan (Dirty Duck)

We had thoroughly enjoyed our meal the nigth before at The Garrick, on the High Street. The Black Swan/Dirty Duck has the same owner and menu, and we thought it would be a good choice for a Sunday Roast!

On the walls there are autographed pictures of famous people who have visited here whilst performing for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The Garrick has the charm and the service, and this pub/restaurant doesnt I am afraid.

We ventured to the back of the pub, where there is a newly built conservatory-type area (Black Swan). The lovely 18th century part of the building is used by the bar area (Dirty Duck).

Service was slack, and even though this was the non-smoking section, the smoking section (which we had to walk through to get to the non-smoking section too, which isnt pleasant!), was right there and it infiltrated the room annoyingly.

The Dirty Duck seemed to be a bit of a dive in comparison to its sister pub in our opinion. They were out of roasts and all things chicken. We ended up with one of only two things they had left on their menu. Fish and Chips.

Now, the fish was nice, but we thought this was bad as we werent that late for lunch, it was about 2pm we ate.

We had to eat though as we had a car journey ahead of us and needed to eat something.

Gower Memorial

by grayfo

This bronze statue shows Shakespeare seated, is surrounded by life-size statues of Lady Macbeth, Prince Hal, Hamlet, Henry V, and Falstaff, representing Philosophy, Tragedy, History, & Comedy. The memorial was sponsored by Lord Ronald Sutherland-Gower, who presented it to the town of Stratford in 1888.
