Travel Tips for Warwick

Activities at the castle

by Jenniflower

We have been here 4 times, at different times of the year.

At Christmas it is very cold, but fun for the kids.. with a specially made ice rink and activities aimed at the kids. They have special jousting weekends in summer, and these are fun, but very crowded!

They have lovely displays in the torture chamber and even a dungeon! They have a rack and stocks where you get to take 'that' shot :)

They also have a green house, which I have always found disappointing... but the peacock shaped shrubs and live peacocks are lovely to see.

This is a super day trip for the family :)

Go Ghost Hunting at Warwick Castle

by little_liebchen

The castle itself is obviously not off the beaten path, but how many of you have had the chance to spend the night there on a ghost hunt with paranormal experts? I was lucky enough to do so with Fright Nights in August 2006. It was, I believe, their first ghost hunt at Warwick Castle. While I still can't say for sure whether or not *I* believe in ghosts, it was certainly a fascinating experience, and many people there obviously saw and experienced things that I did not.

If you are able to participate in one of these ghost hunts, go for it! You won't be sorry. It's very cool.

Ducking Stool

by leics

Hidden in a dark corner of the crypt of the Collegiate Church of St Mary is something I have never seen before..............a ducking stool. This was used as a punishment (usually for women) in Medieval times; the woman was tied to a chair placed on the stool and 'ducked' under water in a convenient pond or river. Not quite as gentle a punishment as it sounds, for the person could be left underwater for a substantial amount of time and, of course, punishment occurred during winter as well as summer. It wasn't intended to be a death sentence, but deaths did occur (particularly amongst elderly women).

St Nicholas Park

by mazzap

St Nicholas Park was opened by the Countess of Warwick in 1933. Set on the banks of the River Avon, and very close to the town centre and Warwick Castle, this park is popular with all age groups.

There is a lovely traditional park café called ‘Warwick Tearooms Café’ serving home made cakes and ice-creams etc. with outdoor seating in warm weather. There are plenty of park activities for children – and you can also hire a boat, play a round of pitch and putt or spend time admiring the beautifully tended gardens.

Parking is available adjoined to the park.
