How shall i write this one up ?
by sourbugger
The advent of such contraptions as the thing I am using now to scrawl this tip led to the death knell of a once proud Brimingham industry. That and the Bic Biro.
There was at one time over 100 firms producing quality pens in the Jewellery quarter of Birmingham, employing people (mainly women) in their thousands. Pretty much all of this has now disappeared.
It's good to see that the trade association has funded this impressive (and free) little museum. Contained in two rooms, there is just about everything you could ever wish to know about the history of pen making in Birmingham. Displays also include typewriters and products produced when production switched to boost the war effort in the 1940's.
I unfortunately arrived when there were no demonsrations going on, but a brief look around convinced me it would be a good place to bring children back to when there was.
It almost makes you nostaligic for the days when you could sign your name elegently on a piece of real paper rather than putting some banal moniker on an e-mail.

The Central Hub Of The Motorway Network
by J_P_B
If you are brave enough to attempt driving to Birmingham, you will find that it is right at the heart of the Motorway Network in the UK. The M5, M6 and M40 all go to Birmingham.
Driving from the South West of England (i.e. Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucester, etc), you use the M5.
Driving from the South East of England (i.e. London, etc), you use the M40.
Driving from the North West of England (i.e. Manchester, Liverpool, Cumbria, Staffordshire) you use the M6.
The M6, M42 and M5 all join up to make a ring of Motorways around Birmingham - a bit like the M25 in London. The Northern section of this (M6) can get very congested and is in fact one of the busiest streches of road in Europe! They are shortly to open the Birmingham Northern Relief Road (M6 Toll) which is the UK's first Toll Road. What effect this will have on the congestion remains to be seen!
Fun and stylish sushi!
by brummielaura about YO! Sushi
Everybody has heard of YO! Sushi, the iconic sushi restaurant, where you pick your food from a conveyor belt. It's a fun way to choose your food (you can also order from the menu), and never boring, as you can watch the sushi chefs at work. Miso soup (unlimited refills) and boiled rice are essentials. For rolls, I'd recommend the classic California rolls (crabstick and avocado). My personal favourite is Prawn Katsu (crispy fried prawns). My friend swears by salmon sashimi.
