Drayton Manor Park

by Heavens-Mirror

Hi
i am staying at the Norfolk hotel in Birmingham in August and have prebooked 2 tickets to go to Drayton manor park. Does anyone know how much it would cost for a taxi to Drayton manor park from the hotel?
Or is there a bus service nearby that we can get there.
Thanks
xxx

Drayton Manor is about a 2 hour drive from Birmingham. A taxi would be VERY expensive. I think you can get a bus:

Alternatively take a train to Tamworth station and get a bus from there.

No, I'm afraid not. If you mean the Norfolk Hotel in Edgbaston, Birmingham then Drayton Manor is just over 100 miles away!

Check distances on:
http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm
This gives a distance of about 25 miles to Tamworth. Taxi fare ? Expensive. Complete guess would be £50 each way. Hire a car instead !

The Drayton Manor Park website shows how close to Tamworth it is:
http://www.draytonmanor.co.uk/Find_Us.aspx

The site helpfully (!) provides no public transport information, but it is about 3 miles from Tamworth railway station - get train times/prices from:
http://www.thetrainline.com/default.asp?T2ID=968_2006724134229
From Birmingham, Tamworth is about 20 mins, day return £5.40.

Wilnecote station is less than 2 miles from DMP and has a shuttle bus (no. 854) to DMP, every 15 mins. This probably represents the most efficient way of getting there.

The standard bus service to Tamworth takes over an hour, but there are special buses form Birmingham direct to DMP during the summer:
http://www.travelwm.co.uk/events/ptv/greatdaysout.jsp
Bus fare is a steep £10, though.

Hope this helps,

Dunx

Yeah, you are right. Sorry. I wasn't beng willfully misleading, I put the postcodes into my route planner software and that's what it told me. Piece of ****!

Still think a taxi would be quite a lot though.

Travel Tips for Birmingham

Railways in Birmingham in 1838

by Galahad

One of the very first railways in Britain ran from Euston in London to Curzon Street in Birmingham. The two ends of the line had very similar doric columned grand stations. The Birmingham building still stands and is just visible from the current main line into New Street, on the right, as you approach Birmingham from London or Coventry.
It is now being developed as the new Royal College of Organists HQ when thay will leave their present site near to the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Jan 2005 The restoration project for the Royal College of Organists will cost GBP8.2m and is due to be completed in 2006

W H Auden's home

by brummielaura

The poet W H Auden (1907-1973) grew up in Birmingham. There is a blue plaque in his memory at the Harborne Swimming Baths (on the site of his childhood home).

If you have seen the film 'Notting Hill', you might remember the emotional recital of Auden's poem 'Funeral Blues' at Gareth's funeral.

To get to the Harborne Swimming Baths, take bus no. 22, 23 from the city centre (Colmore Row), or jump on the 11 Outer Circle bus.

Address: Lordswood Road, Harborne, Birmingham, B17 9QS

by Andycabbage

Make sure you visit broad street for all the best pubs and clubs in the Birmingham area. If you are in to drinking try the harbourne mile pub crawl. This is definatley worth a try. Places in the centre of town can be quite strict so stick to wearing smart clothes and shoes.

Up to the capital

by sourbugger

The main west coast train line connects Birmingham and london. Expect to pay a King's ransom for a ticket, unless you book six months in adavance, online, and wear one blue sock on a Tuesday before travelling.

The alternative is to look at Chiltern railways who run a slower (but cheaper) service from Marylebone station in london (Vigin use Euston) to Moor street or Snow hill in Birmingham (Virgin use New Street). Expect a journey of over two hours, but significant savings. The cheapest restricted fare by this method works out at only a fiver - see deals section.

Not the poshest place in town

by sourbugger about The crusty cob

I'm going to ignore the various delights of all the new restaurants with their fancy la-de-da menus that have sprug up around Birmingham city centre for a tiny caravan sitting forlornly on the side of the A441. Just before junction 2 to the M42 the Crusty cob will place into your hand a trusty cob (local word for a round bun) filled with bacon, egg or whatever other grilled delight you choose. Dash of red, can't be beaten. And all for the princely sun of Two pounds 40p.

Eat in your car. No time wasters please.
