Best transport - Heathrow and Birmingham

by Hashis

Hi folks,

I plan to travel between Heathrow and Birmingham on 11th of December.
Can people advise me the best transport bus or train between these locations.
Do I have to take train or bus? I will be coming to london few days later.
Particularly south london and will fly back again via Heathrow. Any ideas?
Best regards to all
Hashi

I think I am right in saying that you may be best to take one of the coaches run by National Express. The journey time should be around 2 hours 40 minutes depending on traffic. More information and place to book online if you choose:

Also look at this:

Depending on where you are staying in South london, but maybe you can use the X26 bus that operates from Croydon to Heathrow via various south west London places listed on this:

http://www.metrobus.co.uk/timetable.php?route_id=97&type=week

Fare is cheap. This also saves you coming into London to then take a tube or other means to Heathrow.

It does make sense to take the National Express bus direct from Heathrow airport to Birmingham, rather than travelling into London and out again by train. You could do the latter, if you wished, but it woud be more expensive and might not save you much time.

However, you may wish to take the train back to London from Birmingham. If you buy your ticket up to 6pm the night before you travel you may be able to take advantage of cheap advance fares. www.nationalrail.co.uk will give you train times, details and fares.

For transport options to Heathrow from London, look at the 'londontolkit' link above.

You could also consider taking the Railair bus number X25 from Heathrow to Reading (http://www.railair.com/) then a train from Reading to Birmingham.

The bus to Reading runs every 20 - 30 minutes for most of the day and takes around an hour.

From Reading to Birmingham (New Street) there are direct trains every 30 minutes for most of the day taking 1hr 39 minutes for the journey. However on Fridays trains on that route are very, very busy and you may not get a seat unless you reserve in advance, which would be a waste of money, time and effort if your plane is delayed!

I agree that on balance a direct bus journey from Heathrow to Birmingham would be a good option although, depending on time of day, the motorway traffic can be extreme and delay likely.

Walk down Broad Street, the main cultural street in Birmingham.

Around Birmingham you have the recently opened Touchwood Centre in Solihull. The Touchwood centre is packed full of shops of different sorts.

Visit the nearby town of Stratford, the birthplace of William Shakespeare.Where you can stroll down the river Avon or take a boat.

Planet Ice

by DUNK67

Ice skating at Planet Ice.
It is a great place for meeting people and having a laugh skating to the latest music. Skates can be hired or even bought here. The wearing of gloves would be a good idea.

It's been a couple of years since I've been there, but I used to like Bobby Browns, at the end of Gas Street.
2 dance floors, with a quiet chill-out area in between. Good music (old pop favourites downstairs & dance upstairs). Hamburger van used to park outside, which was irresistable as you came out! Bouncers used to be quite fussy - no jeans, trainers etc

New Long Distance Coach Station

by Galahad

8.10.03 An announcement is expected shortly on a new Coach Station next to Snow Hill Railway Station in Great Charles Street.
It will be funded by Birmingham City Council, AMEC and National Express. This will replace the Coach Station in Digbeth which is looking tired and worn out now.
May 2004 Because agreement could not be reached the plans for the coach station have finally been abandoned and Nation Express have announced that they will redevelop the Digbeth Coach Station.
