The Custard Factory and the Rhubarb Rhubarb Image Festival

by lazybug

I'm planning to be in Birmingham during the summer. I wanted to know if anyone knows what The Custard Factory is and if anyone has heard of the Rhubarb Rhubarb Image Festival.

I appreciate your help!!

The Custard Factory is a developing, up-and-coming area of inner-city Birmingham. www.custardfactory.com. Have never heard of the festival you mention (which means very little, as I'm not specially into this type of thing), but there's a relevant website on www.rhubarb-rhubarb.net. Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks so much for the tip. Very helpful!

Do you know if the Custard Factory is a walking distance from the downtown center of Birmingham, or how long would it take to get there with public transport?

Cheers!

walking distance from the Bull Ring ( main shopping centre ) takes 15 mins. Straight down one road - very simple. The Medicine Bar puts on good music event.

The Custard Factory is based in Digbeth, a short walk from New Street and the bus station. It is a culture/media/arts centre. I know that they do a lot of dance productions/workshops there. Try their website www.custardfactory.com Sorry I have not heard of the Rhubarb Rhubarb Lmage Festival.

Travel Tips for Birmingham

The Brummie accent...

by TracyG

A true Brummie accent can be very strong and difficult to understand, some people wil also shorten their words, and even use slang words quite a lot. Even I can not understand some people, and I have lived in this area for quite a while. The black country accent is even worse!

I got the tip to walk along...

by margaux

I got the tip to walk along the canal and yes, this is nice! Unfortunately, the canal is close to the railway, but on a sunday, there are not so many trains passing by.

Along the canal, ther are many fishermen watching their fishing-rods and you come across cycling families and people letting out their dogs.

Do not forget to take our umbrella, since the rain can come (and go) very fast.

The canal takes you to the center of Birmingham and you can get on and of the path at almost every bridge.

Cosy Little Cafe

by brummielaura about Canalside

The Canalside Cafe is a cosy little pub right next to the canal - makes for great views. It feels like an old village pub, with brass plates on the wall, a bookshelf (including books!), a random assortment of chairs and benches, little crooked windows, an assortment of real ales, ...

My friend remarked that the Canalside Cafe reminds her of student pubs in Oxford (where she went to university).

It's very different from the noisy chain pubs that you can find on every corner. Come here for real conversation and a quiet pint! Casual

Trains going North from Birmingham New Street

by Galahad

23rd July 2002 Virgin's service from Birmingham International to Manchester began using their brand new 'Pandolino' tilting trains, which can reach up to 140mph. Virgin have bought 53 of these trains at a cost of £1.2 billion. They continue to provide a service to Glasgow using their new Voyager trains capable of running at 125mph but the track is not suitable for the new 'Pandolino''s.
From May 2003 Virgin are withdrawing their service Birmingham to Liverpool to be replaced with an hourly service by Central Trains using a new supershuttle train.

Italy in Chinatown

by Maggies about Milano

Milano offers a great choice of Italian specialties. My pasta with courgettes, sun-dried tomatoes and pini nuts was excellent. Pasta all' arrabbiata is delicious too. They had very good Montepulciano and Valpolicella!
The place is elegant and has a nice atmosphere and the italian speaking stuff is very friendly.
