Tennis Sensation
by Yudhis
The DFS Classic grass court tournament start every year in June at the Edgbaston Priory Club, for the warmup match to Wimbledon. Many great women players take parts in this lovely atmosphere and surrounding area.
Great events to take your little girls to watch their idols play elegantly in the court.
The Custard Factory
by J_P_B
Previously the home of Birds Custard, this is one of the hippest places to work in Birmingham (I should know, I work there). Other than that though, it has some fantastic shops, the Medicine Bar and constantly has an artistic buzz about it. There are often gigs taking place as well as exhibitions and it is also home to what is allegedly Britain's largest living sculpture, "The Green Man" (see piccie).
It's located in Digbeth, just a couple of hundred metres from the Coach Station if you are heading away from the City.
Classical Music and More
by brummielaura about Symphony Hall
Symphony Hall is a world-class venue for classical music - the acoustics are brilliant. I once sat at the very back of the top circle and it still sounded as if I was sat right in the centre!
There are regular concerts by the CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra). Sir Simon Rattle was their principal conductor before he went off to the Berlin Philharmonics, so this might give you an idea of their class!
Apart from the CBSO concerts, there are frequent concerts by national and international guests. For example, I've heard Bryn Terfel as well as a concert conducted by Sir Simon (as a guest star).
Symphony Hall was only opened in 1991 and is in the same building as the ICC, a convention centre.
Even if you don't go to hear a concert, you can still enter the building. Enter from Centenary Square and leave at Brindley Place at the other end. Smart
By air to Birmingham...
by Moricamby
By air to Birmingham Internation Airport; by train to New Street Station - the centre of the UK rail network; by road - the centre of the road network; by coach
Not by car. There is a one-way road system, that is great if you know it but a maze if you don't. Also it's impossible to park andif you can find a space, the meters are expensive.
Walk. The central area of Birmingham was built on a ridge, so it was built in layers. This means that nowhere is far away - mostly up or down.
By bus. Check out the different saver fares. There is an office just outside New Street Station with details, maps, timetables, etc. Otherwise make sure you have a pocket full of loose change. The buses are pay-as-you-enter and they don't give change! Apart from that the drivers are extremely helpful, especially to tourists.
Classy Chinese!
by Lyndra about China Red
China Red is an excellent restaurant on Broad Street in central Birmingham. The food is typical of many chinese/cantonese restaurants but is served by unbelievably helpful staff in very pleasant surroundings. The food is good quality and the cost provides excellent value for money. It is unusual to need to book but on busy weekends or nearer to Christmas this may be necessary. It is conveniently located right in the middle of Broad Street so is easily accessible. Car parking is on street at the rear of the restaurant but there are some car parks within reasonable walking distance too.
