Transport to Stratford on Avon

In this case the cheapest way is by train from Birmingham Snow Hill station. Train times, details and fares here on www.nationalrail.co.uk Journey time is around an hour, one-way standard fare 6.30GBP.

You can also use long-distance bus (coach). You can book online at

http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/index.cfm

where you will find coach times and fares. Journey time is around an hour, but there are few services. One-way fare from 7.60GBP (maybe less if you book well in advance).

It is possible to make the journey by ordinary bus, but as far as I can see from the travelplanner here:

http://www.transportdirect.info/Web2/Home.aspx?cacheparam=8

you will need to change buses ....so it's much easier to use the train.

Cheap accommodation is not easy to find in Stratford, a year-round very tourist-popular UK town.

The YHA hostel is some way outside the town and offers the cheapest accommodation you are likely to find locally:

http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/heart-of-england/hostels/Stratford-upon-Avon/index.aspx

Otherwise you will need to find a reasonably-priced b&b. The official tourist information site lists all available accommdation, and has a late availability search as well:

The X20 bus does the route every hour: http://www.woottonwawen-pc.gov.uk/pdfs/X20.pdf

That leaflet quoted above is now out of date. The X20 bus is now operated by a different company (Johnson's of Henley)and the times are a little different, although the buses still run once each hour on weekdays and Saturdays, about every 90 minutes on Sundays.

Up to date information can be found at http://www.travelinemidlands.co.uk/ but there is no information about fares.

A downloadable and printable timetable for the X20 can be found at

Travel Tips for Birmingham

Birmingham airport - Sky rail

by sourbugger

Some years ago there was a little MAGLEV train that 'flew' the vast distance of 500 yards or so between the airport terminal and the train station. It no doubt looked good on the bid for the 1992 olympics, where Brum picked up about 3 votes (and those delegates thought they were voting for Birmingham , Alabama)

This futuristic technology was developed by the Germans, and the Chinese who now have a line some 20 miles or so long that catapults trains along at over 300 miles per hour.

So what happens in Birmingham ? It is replaced by a couple of train cars on a length of rope - a system that was perfected around the middle of the late 19th Century. It's also bulit on some tatty concrete legs that look as if they have been nicked from a council-built shopping centre in Lewisham in about 1967.

The Belfry - Ryder Cup Venue

by J_P_B

The Belfry is just a little outside of Birmingham and for many years was the European home of the Ryder Cup. Now that they have started circulating the venue in Europe, this is no longer the case, but still, if you're a golfing nut, you can pretend to be Tiger Woods or Colin Montgomerie, or whoever your particular favourite is and play at this Ryder Cup course. Golf Clubs might be an idea, although you can hire them! :)

New Street

by Imbi

There are few shopping places in Birmingham, and one of them is New Street, which is typical like High Street shopping place.
It starts from Town Centre and both side of this street there are many shops, restaurant and coffees. This street is for pedestrian only so they could walk around freely.

CBSO Centre

by Galahad

Another new venue for me, which I discovered in February 2001, was the CBSO Centre which is the main rehearshal hall of the CBSO Orchestra.
Carol and I went to hear and see a concert of Flamenco music and dancing.

Metro - Snow Hill to Wolverhampton

by Galahad

The current service is a tram every 8 minutes on Birmingham's only tram service, from Snow Hill Railway Station to Wolverhampton's Bus Station via West Bromwich. This is an above the ground service.
Feb 2003 - An application is about to be made to government to extend the metro line by another 2 miles through the centre of the town via New Street Station and Broad Street. This extension would be constructed between 2005 and 2008 and cost 65 million pounds.
14 June 2003 - The Lord Mayor of Birmingham has suggested a ý3 billion underground Metro extension, to ease the huge bottleneck to the shortage of platforms. This will be combined with the problems of more passengers than the station can cope with as the metro could whisk them away quickly!!!
6.10.03 The route is 12.6 miles long with 23 stops (only 6 in Birmingham) The service now carries 5 million people a year.
