Where's the safest areas in Birmingham?
by breakin2010
Thanks for all the good comments about places to avoid in Birmingham. I've just recently moved to Birmingham and am living in a houseshare in Erdington. Not the safest of areas I've realised as today there was a break-in at the house I share (with me in the house!). Luckily I managed to scare them off but now I'm in search of a safer neighbourhood. I need somewhere to rent close to public transport for around Birmingham with shops and amenities nearby. Where are the safest parts of Birmingham? Surely there must be some nice parts!!! Any advice would would be greatly appreciated!!

Check out the crime stat maps for the area by google or through local newspapers. Also, could you not personally speak to the the police services and get their advice.

Break-ins etc are entirely possible anywhere, in Birmingham or any other UK city. The fact that you have been unfortunate enough to experience one does not in itself make Erdington an unsafe area (it isn't, imo).
There's Sutton Coldfield, or Great Barr, or Selly Oak.....but you'll pay for the privilege.
Parts of Bearwood are nice too.
But remember that 'nice' more affluent parts of any city are the obvious targets for thieves. Perhaps you should put your unpleasant experience aside for the moment and give Erdington a bit more time?

Unlucky! Just out of interest how did you scare them off?
Personally unless you have a lot of money then you will probably not be able to move to a safe free zone. But if you require good public transport then I would recommend one of the new estates round be Aston train station, or probably a better are would be wylde green or Chester road. It's about a 10 mins train journey / 20 mins bus journey to the town centre.
Or if you want to live in a beautiful area approx 20 mins by train and bus from the cirty centre I would recommend mere green or four oaks. Lovely areas with Sutton Coldfield practically on your door step. A good social scene and a number of jobs are always available.
Loads of Love x

Travel Tips for Birmingham
Birmingham Nature Centre
by Imbi
Birmingham Nature Centre is the best place to go. The centre has over 134 species of mainly British and European wildlife in a six and a half acre site. It can be found at the back of Cannon Hill Park, opposite Pebble Mill and close to Edgbaston Cricket Ground
Admission: £1.50 adults; £1.00 concs
West midland football teams
by sourbugger
The football teams of the area have been doing relatively well of late with three teams in the English Premiership, after several years in the doldrums.
Aston Villa, is by far the biggest of the teams and is based at Villa Park which you cannot miss seeing from the Motorway spur as you drive into the heart of Brum. They still have failed to capture top honours in the past few years and normally end up about mid table.
Both Birmingham city and West Bromwich Albion cling (precariously at times) to Premiership status. Japser Carrot (a city fan) used to tell the story of standing on the terraces at city, and he turns to the man next time and said "OI YOU OVER THERE"
The real sleeping giant is however Wolverhampton Wanderers (the 'Wolves') who despite a good ground and a massive fanbase have failed, one again, to hit the big time.
There is also Walsall - of which I know nothing.
Above the railway station
by gordonilla about The Pallasades Shopping Centre
As with every city centre - where there are two or more shopping malls - appearances and age dictate the retailers within the complex.
The centre was busy during my visit and there were quite a few shoppers - although many seemed to be passing through to the train stations at New Street and Moor Street.
Check out "Bookends" the discount book store.
Birmingham Tip

Victoria Square is really worth a visit by night... and I'm one who is not fond of taking pics of the famous statue of queen Victoria and I have always refused to shoot one... hope I'm not offending anybody, it's just my taste about pics... but its square in Birmingham is really gorgeous...
