Worth the splurge but more convenient if you're straight!
No, there was absolutely no homophobia from the Hyatt or its staff. I've had great service at Hyatts and this was no exception. It's just the location. The hotel is right on Broad Street immediately opposite the Symphony and at the beginning of where all the pubs are. I needed to be at Hurst Street, where the Hippodrome Theatre and the ballet is, as well as being the main drag for the gay bars. It's about a 20 minute walk, but the Holiday Inn and the Ibis are better situated for that, though not of the same quality.
I found the best rate at Octopus Travel - lower than Hyatt's own website, but they could not honor their best rate guarantee because the Octopus rate came *with* breakfast and the Hyatt rate did not. It's kind of ridiculous, they can only match the absolute exact same rate.
The room was modern and lovely with a calm eggshell colored decor and a panoramic view from floor to ceiling windows. The breakfast buffet in the atrium came with great fruit, cold salmon and ham. The hot food and cereals were slightly less interesting, but that may just be my taste and they will do eggs to order. The health club is very good. Wireless was painfully expensive at the hotel and I could not find nearby alternatives. I walked into the center of town to Beatties Department Store - there is free wireless in the basement cafe. At the Hyatt because of some oddity with the server you can send outgoing email from your room without charge, but you have to pay for any incoming.
