Concrete monstrosity

The building is one ugly mess of concrete. In it's first incarnation it housed British Telecom in Birmingham. When you look at the service areas or staircases, the ghosts of Dave and Mikey from accounts or Derdrie from the typing pool still seem to be hanging around. The utilitarian ceiling tiles also hark back to the dark ages.

It was converted into a 450 room hotel and known as the 'Chamberlain' for several years. Ultimately owned by an American company, the layout of the hotel looks across the pond for inspiration. The rooms are thus exceptionally large by European standards. Many standard rooms feature two double beds. This may be execeptionally useful when you consider the International Convention centre is just across the road. We all know what goes on at those photocopier trade fairs...eh ?

Taken over by the Jury's group, they have brought their Irish flair to running the place. They make good fist of it. Clean and effecient management.

Unique Quality: Large rooms, and good views from the upper floors. From the 16th floor I could see all of Aston !

The 'corners of the world' buffet on the Lower ground floor does mass-catering in a buffet / canteen style. You too can mix up Italian, British, Indian and Chinese on the same plate for around 12 pounds at Lunchtime, or a bit more in the evening. Breakfast at nearly 10 pounds was poor in comparison.

Nice facade, disappointing rooms!

This hotel conveniently situated approximately half way along Broad Street, one of the main drinking and eating thoroughfares and very close to the Indoor Arena etc. Jury's Inn has a good reputation and when you enter the Birmingham Jury's you are initially impressed by the spacious and appealing reception area. The staff on the reception desk are mulyi lingual to cater for the international business people that come here. The hotel has a lovely restaurant and bar with a range of tasty food options. The standard rooms are very basic I'm afraid and the room we had was cluttered and seemed ill designed (my very personal opinion). Typical amenities are available such as satellite tv. There is a car park that charges about £3 per day at the rear of the hotel (well signed). The bonus of this hotel for me was the good price - £80 per night when we stayed and the Jury's Doyle website often advertises great bargains.
This hotel is nothing special but if you want a clean and well located hotel that is good value for money then the Jury's will suit. If you want a romantic break or something more then try the Hyatt or Radisson SAS instead!

Unique Quality: There are no features of this hotel that make it stand out.

Reasonably priced city center hotel

Here on business for three days, the local office of my company booked this hotel for me.

Rooms are MUCH larger than one usually finds in European hotels, as you can see by the photo. Two double beds with lots of space around them.

But why is it that so many hotels just don't understand how to make a shower comfortable?

Here again, that hated half-panel glass partition that forces you to make impossible contortions to turn the water on without soaking yourself in cold water. And these particular controls were very difficult to figure out and manage.

Then, once you step in, copious amounts of water end up on the bathroom floor no matter how hard you try to position your body to avoid this.

And couldn't they provide two towels? - those of us with long hair could really use a second towel.

And the hair dryer. It was bolted down, inside a drawer in the bedroom, NOT the bathroom, making it impossible to see yourself in a mirror while drying you hair.

Ah well. All in all, the hotel was fine. Modern, convenient, clean, with just about everything you need.

Perhaps best, they are located next door to a good restaurant with good wines, Il Vilaggio. This was particularly helpful when the heavens opened up one cold night and it poured and poured, making the idea of even a cab ride unpleasant. I recommend the Pollo Valdostone (chicken breast with prosciutto -- mmmmm!)

At 80 pounds for a single, I would say it was a decent deal.

High up in the sky!

All Chamberlain rooms are en-suite and include telephone, satellite colour TV and tea & coffee making facilities as standard.
Nice hotel for business meetings, a bit sterile for holiday trips.

OK business hotel

This is marketed as one of Birmingham's best hotels. Mmm - doesn't say much for the others or, more likely, the reality is not quite the hype.

It's basically an efficient, soulless business hotel, highlighted by the large, white, featureless marbled foyer. The rooms are reasonably sized, but a little run-down and the furnishings have seen better days. But the location is good, the hotel is not awful - just not memorable.

Unique Quality: Good location, efficient, comfortable but nothing more.

Best in Broad Street?

This hotel is near Brindley Place, the theatres, nightclubs, restaurants and a couple of small shops that sell ready-meals if you are desperate. It is a 5 min walk to the Museum and Art Gallery...and 10-15 min walk from New Street Station and the Bullring.

If you arrive at New Street and take a taxi to Jurys Inn, around 5-6pm, beware that due to traffic it takes double the amount of time to get to the hotel and it costs double. I was charged 10GBP for the short journey.

Unique Quality: I had a lovely ensuite room overlooking the canal on the 11th floor. I enjoyed flat screen tv, a choice of two double beds, the usual tea and coffee facilities, nice crisp linen and a choice of pillows; I liked it that the curtains are thick, and if you are not used to the British summer day starting around 4am you can sleep on. Fresh towels every day. Bar and restaurant onsite. Can catch the bus to and from New Street opposite hotel if you hate to walk.

I dont get it that these big hotel groups cant provide herb teas. There is no safe in the room or a fridge, or indeed no ice machine where you can help yourself. Reception have small safe boxes where you can leave stuff but they are tiny and it is very inconvenient to have to ask at reception every time you need to use it. Although there is a ramp for your cases into the hotel, there are steps up the reception desk, which some people hate.

More about Jurys Inn Birmingham

NO 1 in my book

by TripAdvisor Member Bri17

Stayed at the Jurys Inn Birmingham for 5 days at the start of August. Had a room on the 16th floor with a superb view over the city and of the canal network. The room was excellent and the Hotel have been installing air-conditioning in all the rooms which was a great benefit as the weather was hot and without it I would have been very uncomfortable, more hotels should install air con. The bar and restaurant were lively and I particularly liked the buffet in the restaurant, there were great food choices for breakfast and for dinner. The area areound the hotel is good for relaxing, not what I expected. So many people talk Birmingham down but the city is good. Shopping, night life, relaxation, canal boat trips and options for the kids all on the door step.

I defiantely recommend this Hotel and city, great value for money and a super friendly environment.

Jury's Inn, Birmingham, give it a try...you won't be dissapointed.

We have just returned from an overnight stay at Jurys Inn Broad Street Birmingham.
The hotel is excellent, with a lovely welcome as we booked in without any problems or delays. We asked for a quiet room at the back at the hotel and that was no problem either. Huge room with two large double beds, both very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with as much as you wanted of everything on offer, including full english. Comfortable lounge area to relax in with separate smoking and non smoking areas. Perfect location for NIA (the purpose of our visit) and Brindley Place. Would definetely make a return visit.

Very comfortable

I have recently stayed here for 4 nights with a couple of friends, and compared to the Travelodges I usually frequent,.. this was sheer luxury!
We arrived at New Street station and walked to the hotel which took us about 10 - 15 mins.
Check-in was quick and efficient.
The room was on the third floor and a decent size with 2 double beds. The mattresses were very firm and deep - I had no trouble sleeping. Everything was clean.
We needed extra towels and pillows - all were dutifully provided without a fuss.
The shower was fairly powerful, although we had to be careful with the direction of the spray due to the small-ish shower screen.
The windows in our room did not open, which was a shame, as it gets a little stuffy at night.
And I agree with the previous comment concerning the bedding - light duvets would be less cumbersome than sheets and blankets.

Breakfast was fine: hot food, cereal, toast, fruit and croissants. We also tried the bar food in the evening and this was good value for money - I ordered some potato wedges with sour cream and barbecue sauce, and it was enough to feed an army!

The hotel is situated on a busy street with plenty of nightclubs around, so it can be a little noisy and crowded in the evening, especially at the weekends.
I would recommend this Jury's Inn as a good base to explore Birmingham, and I would definitely stay there again.

the food is terrible!

stayed here for a week in june. the bed was comfortable, but the windows do not open and there was no air conditioning in my room. unfortunately by the side of the tv was a large pictorial poster advertising the differant porn films you could purchase. i did speak to the duty manager as i felt it was offensive and does not inspire confidence in lone female travellers (yes, we are business people as well), and was advised they are reviewing it but there is a huge demand for it! the food was awful! breakfast was ok, but lunch tended to be greasy curry, sticky pasta and gluey noodles, dinner was the same but bigger plates available! at these prices i do feel much more effort could be made, but i dont think they are that bothered.

6 nights in Jurys Inn

by A TripAdvisor Member

Stayed in this Hotel for 6 nights in June 2006. I booked a triple room in this hotel at www.otel.com at 99 pounds per night, inclusive of full buffet breakfast.

The hotel was well located at the city centre. There were a variety of restaurants at Brindley Place just opposite of the hotel. The shopping area at New Street and Bull Ring was a nice 10 to 15 minutes walk from the hotel.

Check-in and check-out were quick and efficient. Luggage could be stored after check-out.

Was given a non-smoking room on the 10th storey. Room was well located without disturbing noise. The room was very clean and spacious with two large comfortable beds. There was a hot water boiler and tea bags, coffee, sugar and milk were provided. High Internet access was available in every room at 10 pounds per day. Unfortunately the air-con was centrally controlled. At times it was hot and stuffy and we couldn't adjust the room temperature. The windows could not be opened. TV was small and old. Hope the hotel would upgrade their TVs to bigger LCD TVs.

Bathroom was very clean and shower was sufficiently strong. There was a small glass panel above the bathtub to prevent water from shower to spray on the bathroom floor. Unfortunately it was too small and water easily sprays on the bathroom floor. There was also no drainage hole on the bathroom floor to drain off the water on the floor. A poor design.

Breakfast was excellent. Full buffet breakfast was served. A wide choice of coffee such as Latte, Expresso, Cuppuchino, ...etc.

Overall a good hotel. I had a very comfortable stay there. I would come back again.
