More about Malmaison Birmingham

Brilliant stay!

by TripAdvisor Member Bursty

We recently chose the Malmaison for a one night getaway, and it proved the perfect venue. The room was spacious, with an equally as roomy bathroom with lovely toiletries provided. Our request for an ice bucket was met within what seemed like seconds, and room service was quick and efficient, with the food tasty and very reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend the Malmaison, and we are already planning our next weekend away at the brand new Malmaison in Oxford which is opening in November.

disappointing

by TripAdvisor Member GaryThomas

We've stayed/eaten at four Malmaisons, quite a few times, and it's been consistently good, but this was disappointing.

When we arrived, Reception had no record of my on-line booking - though I had received 3 email confirmations. There was also no record of our brasserie reservation (see below) - and we were offered either 7.15pm or 9.45pm - it was only the receptionist's persistence that got us our original 8.30pm reinstated. Later on Saturday, I asked reception to order The Observer for the morning - but it was never delivered. The courgette and gruyere twice-baked souffle really was dreadful - it appeared to have been cooked in a breakfast bowl, and was the consistency of pudding. On the breakfast buffet, there were yoghurts 2 days beyond their 'best by' date.

And the air conditioning in our room wasn't working properly.

These are small things, but they add up. I emailed the above to their central reservations and birmingham emails, but a week later, they haven't even acknowledged.

Maybe it's this branch of the chain. A stay at Leeds Malmaison in July was 100% great.

Stylish Hotel in a great location

by TripAdvisor Member coro_41

My husband and I stayed for one night at the Malmaison in Birmingham and were very impressed! We booked directly on the Malmaison website and got a great deal that included dinner.

The Hotel is in a great location, especially if you like shopping and the rooms were stylish and a good size. The staff were helpful and smiling. The one down point is the lack of parking and the Mailbox Carpark was quite expensive.

The bar was trendy and busy in the evening and we ate in the bistro which was reasonable but not very exciting. I would recommend eating elsewhere as there is plenty to choose from a short walk away.

All in all a very enjoyable stay and if you like trendy hotels, I would definitely give this one a try if you are in Birmingham.

One of the best

by TripAdvisor Member sailchick

I stay in hotels for most of my working life and this one is one of the best i've stayed in. The bed was total heaven, the room sumptous, the Spa was an idyllic haven (altho the treatments were quite pricey) and it was close by to New Street station and the shopping areas. Really recommend this for a comfortable, relaxing and memorable stay.

Great hotel

by TripAdvisor Member conferenceprofessional

Had a couple of experiences at check in - one not so good, with the staff dismissive and uncaring. Second experience staff were friendly, fun and helpful.

Great bar on the first floor.

What really set this hotel apart for me was the comfort of the room. It wasn't massive but the fabrics, bed linen, chair, everything about the room made this a comfortable, stylish place to be. I was travelling on business, and would love to go back for leisure and really enjoy the room. The bed was firm, but the soft mattress cover made this bed wonderful.

Every room has a cd and radio, and they leave classic FM on when you enter the room which is a great touch. They also deliver fresh milk to your room in the morning if you wish, so you can have morning tea/coffee with real milk.

Loved the Malmaison and can't wait to go back and enjoy it properly.

Fantastic

This was an amazing hotel which i simply could not fault. The staff were extremely friendly and the rooms were perfect. The attention to detail was lovely in this fantastically modern hotel. As you go out the back of the Mailbox you can walk along the canal which is like a little secret place in the middle of Birmingham with plenty of bars and restaurants. I would definetly recomend Red Pepers Restaurant which is just outside the Mailbox but would recommend booking as we had to wait 2 hours for a table, although it was worth it. We had a fantastic weekend away. Thank you Malmaison!

Find another 5 star hotel...

by TripAdvisor Member LondonsTraveller

I was really looking forward to staying at Malmaison but was actually disappointed. The room was a decent size so no complaints there - you def won't get a room with a view (not in Birmingham anyway).

The staff made no impression and didn't seem happy. I personally think it's because of the management. We spotted a manager who was more miserable than an wet, windy day.

The most disappointing part of staying at the Malmaison, was the restaurant. Service was crap, food was crap and there were no faces with any smiles!!
My trip advice would be to find another 5 star to stay at. On a good note, I did spot one celebrity :)

First time that a Mal has been disappointing

by TripAdvisor Member theoriginalsid

Usually a big fan of Malmaison hotels I had a rude awakening at the weekend in Birmingham. First the good points: our room was massive and reasonably priced and the location is excellent as other reviewers have said.

Now for the downside.

(1) I had requested and had had confirmed in writing a late check-out -- at extra cost -- on the Sunday but initially there was no trace of my request and the reception staff tried to (i) kick me out early and then (ii) charge me the full rate for a third night's stay.
(2) On the first night we were delivered the wrong room service order. As it had taken quite a while to be delivered we ate it anyway as it wasn't so much different to what we'd ordered but I rang down, pointed it out and asked them to rectify the charge on our bill. We were criticised for touching food that wasn't meant for us and the charge wasn't rectified as I discovered on check-out.
(3) Despite having been out in the city for 6 hours on the Saturday and having already asked once following a brief return to the room our room hadn't been serviced when we finally returned at 5 pm.
(4) I spotted too late that several bar charges had been added to my bill that I couldn't account for.
(5) Malmaison in Birmigham seems to now add 'optional' gratuities of 10% to all room service and (signed for) bar bills as well as leaving the slips open for you to complete the total, ie add a tip, meaning that I tipped a lot more than I'd intended.
(6) I felt sorry for the bar manager who was trying his best to enforce the 'residents only after 11 pm and please have your key card with you' rule but who was constantly being overruled by the front of house staff / Duty Manager who seemed to be issuing guest ID cards willy nilly.

These things left such a nasty aftertaste that, despite my affection for the chain, I'll surely look elsewhere if I'm in Birmingham again

Very good hotel, but the food is just not good at all.

by A TripAdvisor Member

I´ve been staying at the Malmaison for business purposes; the hotel is very nice, well decorated and the room is really good and very relaxing, I enjoy the installations very much.

The service tough is not the same, the food is really bad I had to leave sometimes the food untouched because it tasted really bad.

I had to go every night at reception to reactivate my room key because with no apparent cause my room key just didn´t work every day.

The location is really excellent, it´s in the hearth of town.

It is definately a chain hotel .. go there if you like chains I think ..

by TripAdvisor Member SA123

It is a very good hotel for business people. Good price, good location, clean, pleasant rooms, gym downstairs, little pamper options for the girls, convenient bar, good food and the rules and boxes to go with it. Unfortunately, I like the more relaxed touch to a hotel.

Check in is at 3pm and if you arrive earlier than that, expect to be told “they are fully booked, they can not possibly check you in and why are you standing at my desk asking me such questions?”

The spa is nicely done, but a little awkward, clinical with dark and cloured lighting. Similar factual reception, "no robes for hotel guests, it is the spa policy" However, the massage was not bad at all, do not expect get into the problem and walk away feeling great massage, but a good pamper.

The rooms .. again are clean, bright and spacious, but again there is something comfy lacking.

From this it sounds like I do not like contemporary clean cut hotels, but I do, very much so and have a nice list of them .. this just is a chain .. and it feels like it .. It probably is more suitable for business people than some of my favs .. but for that weekend away to see a show, go shopping .. just to relax away from home .. I would not choose it again unless it was the best Birmingham had to offer and even then I think I might prefer a different city than going there again
