This hotel was built in 1704, and was originally a wayside inn and as you approach it on the Hagley Road it looks like it doesn't belong there such is its dramatic facade. The hotel is very close to Birmingham city centre (about 7 mins walk from Five Ways Island) and therefore close to the bars, clubs and restaurants of Broad Street. The location can't be faulted.
This Victorian hotel, which replaced the majority of the original buildings, has lovely gardens but for us the rooms did not quite match the splendour of the bar/lounge area and exterior of the hotel. The rooms have all required supplies and amnities such as satellite television and hairdryers but it is a standard room and as such is exactly as you would expect. Clean and tidy room and bathroom with minimal furniture, the room was comfortable but we had expected something more classy and in that much were disappointed. I would tell anyone considering this hotel to stay on the Hagley Road and not to wander to far to the back region of the hotel which leads to a more rough area of Edgbaston.
The hotel was very reasonably priced for something so close to the city centre at approx £60 per night.
The exterior and old parts of this building are a delight to look at.
Its location is ideal for easy access to Birmingham.
There are some very nice restaurants further along Hagley Road that may also appeal
