Birmingham city center

by Caracai

Hi just wondering if some one could tell me if birmingham city center is safe to stay the night with famil in the novelle hotel. And any 1 know of a nice family friendly place to eat out there

Re: Birmingham city center

I stayed at Jurys Inns on Broad Street last October and walked through the city centre quite late and it was fine. Its quite a young persons city centre - everyone out seemed to be under 25 but perhaps thats the impression I got. I did not feel not safe at all.
No ideas really on eating out other than we had trouble finding a table for 6 so wherever you go book in advance I guess.

Do you mean the Novotel on Broad Street?
Broad Street, especially at weekends, has a busy night-life with bars and clubs etc.
You should be fine. There are loads of police and security people about because of the night scene. You are near a business centre during the day and next to the Gas Street Basin/Brindley Place shops and canal complex.

...eating-out.
Lots of choice although the nearby Mailbox centre is (IMO) expensive.
There are restaurants along Broad Street and around Brindley Place.
Across town - not a huge walk - is the Hippodrome Theatre and the Arcadian Centre for loads of chinese and other restaurants. (It's the "Chinese Quarter")
A short taxi riode away is the famous "Balti Triangle" - a scruffy collection of three roads in a parallel line rather than a triangle but with excellent Balti (Asian) restaurants. Many of these are BYO so take beer and wine with you or use one of the few off-licences (liquor stores) before entering.

Travel Tips for Birmingham

Calling outside UK

by fouads

Calling from puplic phone to outside UK is expensive so you can buy some prepaid calling card , they are cheap and can call anyone .
there is too much kind so ask the seller for the best card for the destenation you want to call

Professional Football

by DUNK67

Professional football can be seen at several venues within a short distance of the city centre during the season (August-May). These can be reached by short bus, taxi or train trips.
Aston Villa (my favourite) are one of the most famous teams in British and world football. They are steeped in history and have a trophy cabinet that is only surpassed by a handful of teams in England and are founder members of both the Football League and Premier League. Some of the worlds best players can be seen playing for and against Aston Villa on regular occasions during the season in league and cup matches. Your eyes to watch of course.

Elite Shopping Mall/Street

by Galahad about The Mailbox

This is Birmingham' most exclusive shopping development. It has been described as Birmingham's Bond Street. All the shops are very up market - Harvey Nicholls, shoe shops, art dealers, top women's hair stylists, etc. There are now several good quality restaurants overlooking the smart restored canal-side or in the old street . The reason for my title of Mall/Street is that an old street goes through the centre of the building, called Wharfside Street, and that the shopfronts are in line with old street boundaries.
Most of the restaurants are at what I call the back of the building. Several of them overlook the canal (which has been all tidied up) and in the summer it can be very pleasant to eat outside here.
The BBC have moved their Midlands Television, Radio and Local Radio studios to The Mailbox and they have a retail shop in the foyer , again this is at the canal end of the building. Most of the shops are expensive but the restaurants are not all at the very expensive end of the market (even I can afford some of them!!!). I look forward to other people's views

O'Neills

by kayleigh06 about Broad Street

O'neills is across the road from where I work so it is an easy place to get to for something to eat on the lunchbreak. The food is some fo the besta round and it is dirt cheap (compared to the rest of Broad Street) during the day.

I usually have the O'neills burger and a pint of Stella and that comes upto just under £6.

The burger is £2.95 and comes with a decent amount of chips on the side.

Of a night (especially the main clubbing nights) the place is completely different, you have loud music pumping and it get's RAMMED! It get's that full as soon as you walk in the door that's where you are until you decide to leave.

It can be a good atmosphere but not for the claustrophobic.

Be prepared to have a few drinks spilt on you, up you and down you. During the day anything goes.

Of an evening standard dress code for a club/bar. There are bouncers on the door so you won't get away with wearing trainers or anything that isn't acceptable.

Burmingham International...

by Aragina

Burmingham International Airport can be reach by most air companies. It is served by trains from the City Centre, London and elsewhere, calling at Birmingham International Station.
Buses and Train. Centro cover the services for Birmingham and provide a very good service.
