Have a batch!!!
by Thistle-Rose
You might be more familiar with the terms bap and roll but for some strange reason people in Coventry and Nuneaton (a nearby town) call these batches. So if you hear the expression you will now know what it means. You could event try asking for one when you find yourself in a cafe or getting lunch somewhere. You could have a cheese batch, a tuna batch, a ham batch in fact whatever filling you like - and it is a batch!!!
The Midland Air Museum
by Thistle-Rose
This is on the outskirts of Coventry in a small village called Baginton which is where Coventry Airport is also located. At the museum there is a display of different aircraft which shows more than seventy years of aviation development. You can reach the museum easily by car and there are directions on the website and also it can be reached from the city centre by bus. Numbers 538 or 539 will take you from the Main Bus station to Baginton.
It is definitely worth a visit as there are some extremely impressive aircraft housed here and also a lot of information to be gained about Sir Frank Whittle who was the inventor of the first jet engine!
A new place to eat
by denise16 about Desi Dish
This recently opened restaurant is a comtempory design with a very warm welcome. Desi is Indian for homemade or authentic. It makes a pleasant change to see such a varied menu with over 90 dishes to the menu.
Students get a 10% discount on dining in and a further 5% on take outs~ which is handy because it is close to the university.
The chef makes a point of coming to speak to guests and ask their opinions. He asks for a negative and a posiutive and claims that todays negatvies will be tomorrows positives.
A restaurant favoured by the local Indian community, so that it always a sign of authenticity. Specialises in SOuthern Indian and Punjabi style food with lots of recipes from the Chef's Grandmother. Allo Zeera Dry potatoes cooked with cumin seeds. Lovely is the best word to describe them.
Dhingri Mattar Masala- mushrooms and snow peas was also good but a little hot for my personal taste.
The pineapple pickle didn't not work for me or my friend, but you might like it.
Coventry Cathedral
by Tom_Fields
Behind the ruined Church of St Michael is the new Coventry Cathedral. Devoted to reconciliation from the horrors of the World Wars, this modern structure is unlike most other cathedrals in the UK.
That's not to say that it's ugly. The inside is very beautiful and peaceful. It's all well done, but don't expect a medieval Gothic cathedral, such as the others for which Europe is so famous. Consecrated in 1962, this new church stands in contrast to the charred ruins of the old one. Together, they are a powerful testament to destruction, rebuilding, and reconciliation with the past.
Lady Godiva
by Thistle-Rose
Lady Godiva was the wife of Leofric, the Earl of Mercia. The story goes that Lady Godiva was empathetic towards the people of Coventry due to the high taxation they had to pay. She repeatedly asked her husband to be more considerate but this still had no affect. She then claimed to Leofric that she would parade naked through the streets of Coventry if he did not address the taxation issue. He did not respond or change the taxation and so she did as she had told him. During her 'parading' Godiva asked that all people, out of respect, should not flock to see the event but simply close their windows and doors. However, one person did not respect Godiva's wsihes and he had a sneaky peek. He is simply now known as 'Peeping Tom'.
So, as a result of this, there is a statue of Lady Godiva in the centre of the city. This used to be quite hidden under a huge white canopy outside the shopping centre 'Cathedral Lanes'. But recently the canopy has been removed and she can now be seen out in the open as she should be!!! There is also a clock closeby and on the hour Godiva, on horseback rides out of one door and back in through another and above appears a man who is 'peeping' as she goes. This is the legendary 'Peeping Tom'.
A pleasant stroll around the city centre and you can see the beautiful statue and if you manage to be there near the clock, on the hour, it will definitely give you a little giggle!
