A bit of Royal treatment
The Royal Hotel seems to be independent rather than part of a big chain. It's had a fairly recent refurbishment (visited Dec 2008) and had a nice new feel to it, both in the rooms and the public areas. I found it good value for money at £75 for a single and £85 a double. The single room was small but functional with a multi-channel TV, tea & coffee tray, iron, desk, comfortable bed and complimentary toiletries. There was no bath and the shower was a little small but that was the only complaint about the room.
The reception and bar staff were both friendly and efficient and there is a nice lounge bar with good prices and regular live music. The restaurant area is called The Kitchen, it has it’s own bar and can be hired out for functions for up to 100 people. It's a late night venue so you might encounter a little noise. Recommended.
Unique Quality: A good Full English breakfast, or Continental option, is included within the price of the room.
