More about Hilton Avisford Park, Arundel

Excellent value for money

by TripAdvisor Member 2156Michael

I planned a visit to West Sussex for a few days and chose this hotel as it appeared to be in a good location and the rates were good.
Having booked, I then read the reviews and felt somewhat apprehensive when I had saw some of the comments.
I should not have been influenced. The hotel has recently been refurbished. The welcome at reception was warm and friendly. Our luggage was removed from the cark park to our room and was waiting for us following book in. So there is no lift - there is only 2 floors!
Our room was spacious and airy with three windows giving good views over the grounds and golf course. There was a good sized bathroom and all was clean and comfortable.
The food was very good both in the restaurant and the bar/lounge and the service was excellent.
The staff, of whom there are are plenty, were efficient and extremely friendly - nothing was too much trouble.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to other travellers.

Friendly and efficient

We visited on a very busy May weekend with numerous functions taking place in the hotel.
Although the hotel seemed full the Receptionist had no difficulty relocating a disabled friend of ours to a ground floor room (hotel has no lift). This set the standard for our weekend as we found all the staff helpfull courteous and efficient. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble.
Our accommodation was most comfortable, the bathroom spotless and extra pillows to hand. When we 'lost' our lighting for a few minutes the porter arrived promptly to reset the 'electrics'
We had good advice from the pool attendant on where to eat locally and the receptionist even took the trouble to look up the website for Sunday shop opening times in Arundel for us.
Our group enjoyed an excellent dinner on the Saturday night and although the restaurant was busy, service and quality of food was very good.
Only downside was that coffee and tea in the bar / lounge was
a bit overpriced (£3.50 for a capuccino) but the female singer / songwriter on the Saturday evening more than made up for it.
All in all, very good value for money on a discount weekend break

Tired, lacking atmosphere and very expensive...

We stayed here for a weekend and attended a wedding reception held at the hotel. First impression was not too bad, however once we went upstairs to find our rooms it got worse. The floors are sloping and bumpy in certain areas and the corridors look grubby and dated. The carpets are in need of a good clean. Yes, the property is old but that is no excuse.

Our double room was ok, again decor a bit dated but generally clean, plus point was the modern clean bathroom. Unfortunately overlooking the delivery area and back of the kitchen so a lot of banging and crashing going on at times. We all found our rooms very stuffy, even with the window open and the portable fan at full blast. Glad it wasn't the height of summer.

The public areas lacked any atmosphere and staff appeared to be on a go slow. The bar is horrendously overpriced at £7.45 for a glass of wine and other drinks on a par with that. We were unfortunately a captive audience so couldn't do much about it!

Tried and failed to get room service on two occasions. No reply after ringing for several minutes, and also no reply from reception. Gave up in disgust and went to the bar to order food and walk back to our room with it! Nobody at reception to complain to.

The standard of food is probably the only thing that saved this hotel from getting a rock bottom rating. Breakfast was fresh and hot on both occasions and the meal we had for the wedding was great.

Would not recommend this hotel and would not return again through choice. On reading a previous review stating it has improved after a refurbishment, I dread to think what it was like before. Have stayed at several Hilton's and this place does not warrant the title.
