Cow and Calf
Ilkley is a moorland town which lies on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park among some of the most spectacular and unspoilt scenery in the country.
The Cow and Calf are distinctive South Pennine Moor rocks, made from 300 million year old sandstone. Over time the softer shale surronding them eroded leaving the harder sandstone. The Almscliffe Craggs directly behind, across the valley were created in the same way.
The Calf Rock used to have a "daddy" - this was another rock which split from the main cragg and rolled down the hill. This was the "Bull" rock but was broken up and used for building many years ago.
