Residence6 hotel in Leeds UK

by betsy1995

Hi we are planning on coming to Leeds,Bradford area for business Sept 16-19. Am looking for some nice lodging in the area,I saw a place called residence 6. What is it like? Do you have any sighseeing reccomendations for the other people in our group to do? We are not sure if we should rent a car(driving sides or road is backward for us) or just use public transportations. Any one have any help or suggestions?? PS we are flying into Manchester arriving Sept.16am thanks for any help. Betsy

http://www.manchester-airport-guide.co.uk/transport.html has links for the transport to/from the airport.

Residence 6 has very good online reviews, so I suspect you will not be disappointed if you use it (although it is not really a hotel, more like very posh serviced apartments.....you'll have to organise your own breakfast etc).

Don't bother with hiring a car for such a short stay; use trains and buses, with perhaps the odd taxi if you want/can afford it. Definitely take the train to York (www.nationalrail.co.uk for times and fares) and spend as much time as you can there (look at the VT pages for information).

http://www.leeds.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Tourism_and_travel/Local_attractions/page.aspx has information and links on places of interest in and near to Leeds.

http://www.yorkshire.com/cps/rde/xchg/ytb/ has information on other places to visit in Yorkshire (look at the VT pages too), but York is an absolute must if you can find the time.

The trains to Leeds from Manchester Airport are every 20 minutes or so ( see www.transpennineexpres.co.uk). Fast and new trains with drinks and snacks and the ride is very scenic. Do not drive - there is no need and its simply not recommended. The trains are cheap and frequent to most places - think about Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ilkley , Skipton or Haworth for sight seeing - there are good VT pages on these towns - Haworth is my top recommendation. You take a train to Keighley ( wwww.northernrail.co.uk) and then an old steam train (www.kwvr.co.uk).

Travel Tips for Leeds

Todmorden

by davidcross

Most visitors to Leeds probably do not even know that Todmorden exists. Yet it is in a supurb situation and many walks are possible from it. There is a recently refurbished Youth hostel in an old tudor hall in a conservation village.
It is on the direct line from Leeds to Manchester Victoria and I have now been able to give it its own page.

Leeds has good bus services...

by SusanneBeck

Leeds has good bus services (there are about 90m trips a year) and is also linked into long distance services from the rest of West Yorkshire. Leeds city bus station is located on New York Street. A new National Express coach terminal has been built adjoining the bus station. This has 10 stands and a waiting area with a small buffet bar.

Delicious Italian pizza.

by alyf1961 about Bella Italia

Bella Italia, one of my favourite restaurants chains in the country.
The pizza bases are authentic Italian with delicious toppings. But they don't just do pizza they have a full range of Italian favourites. My favourite meal from here is the carne mista pizza [meat feast]. followed by tiramisu which is so creamy and rich.

CORN EXCHANGE

by alyf1961

Cuthbert Broderick [the architect behind the Leeds Town Hall] designed the corn exchange in 1860. The building was designed to improve facilities for farmers and merchants. The building was designed as open plan inside on three levels with two rows of windows on the outside. The dome has two sections of glazing with natural light that was essential for the trading in grains and cereals.
In recent years the building has changed from quirky retro shops into a space for restaurants and cafe's.

Fancy a curry

by DavePage

"Food glorious food - Akbars"

If you are visiting West Yorkshire and Leeds for the first time you need to get yourself to Akbars, there are 2 restaurants now in the city centre one on Eastgate (continuation of the Headrow) which is a bit cosy and the new larger classier restaurant on Greek street.

They have won many awards for their Indian cuisine and and when I moved to Yorkshire and was working in Bradford, I was often told by my asian friends that this was the place to go.

"Going out - having a few scoops"

If you want to experience the real local night out, you need to get yourself down to the Corn Exchange area. You have several large pubs which are now open late as well as Back to Basics which is my club of choice.

However this can get a bit rowdy about 2am so keep your wits.

Headingley is also a great area for a night out and you can do the Ottley run with the students from the end of September watching them make a mess of themselves.....
