Best day trip from Leeds

by usafinn

Hello--I have an extra day in Leeds and am wondering what the best day trip (via rail or bus) is from Leeds? I literally have ALL day. We will have spent time in London already.

Thanks in Advance for your advice!

I would recommend York to you. It is a beautiful place to visit, and is only around 20-30 mins on the train, and a return ticket costs around £6-£8. Have fun

Definitely York, no question about it. Look at the VT York pages to see why!

Haworth is my recomendation - take a Skipton bound train and get off at Keighley after 20 minutes. In the summer the steam train will be working on the Worth Valley railway most days but if not take the Oxenhope bus and get off in Haworth - a 20 minute journey. There are lots of members pages on Haworth so you can see what you think.

If you want one of the historic centres of England, definately York. Easy to reach by train (or the bus I mention below).

If you want areas of outstanding natural beauty, the Yorkshire coast with places like Whitby is easy to reach if you have a whole day. This bus will take you there via York and then the stunning North York Moors National Park:

Takes a while but is worth every second.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is closer to Leeds itself and also stunning. A great bus is 800/805 which takes you to places like Grassington, Aysgarth (with the waterfalls used in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood) and Hawes. Check the times at: http://www.dalesbus.org

True, but to Beverley you don't go across the fantastic moors :)

Travel Tips for Leeds

Leeds, despite being a big city with a large population, is beautiful. There are lots of parks around the city and its outskirts. Golden Acre Park is about six miles north west of the centre of Leeds at Bramhope on the A660 Otley Road. There's also the Canal Gardens where you can see lots of different, beautiful flowers. There's also Middleton Park, Roundhay Park and many more.

Studley Royal & Fountains Abbey

by steventilly

Studley Royal & Fountains Abbey (about 5km West of Ripon).
Studley Royal is a deer park with a church in the grounds, and also a lake and a valley with a stream running through it. It's a very pleasant place to spend a sunny afternoon.

Take a look also at the travelogue and official website.

Yummy fish & chips

by BorneoGrrl about Harry Ramsden

I went to the original fish & chips shop opened by the infamous Harry Ramsden in Guiseley near Leeds. The restaurant is furnished in an English themed style complete with red carpets, chandeliers & stained glass windows

I was told that Harry Ramsden family had sold the business and is now available in many locations around the world I had a tough time to choose from the choices of fishes available e.g haddock, cod, salmon where you can have it battered, fried or grilled. The desserts are very good too, I had the cheese cake. Yummy!!

lovely location

by alyf1961 about the olive press

A lovely Italian restaurant by the canal in Leeds city centre. We went on a cold Monday evening and there were not many people walking along the canal. On nice evenings, it is a lot busier.

Monday - Thursday 11:30 - 22:00
Friday - Saturday 11:30 - 23:00
Sunday Closed I had a delicious American pizza [crispy Italian pizza base] with fries and ginger beer, for dessert, I had a Knickerbocker glory...delicious.

There is an offer on a Monday of 50% off main courses.

Shopping - Granary Wharf - Offers canalside shopping, in the unique historic setting of Leeds Waterfront. With its 'Festival Market' every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays there's a fun-filled atmosphere with a wide range of street entertainment including juggling, brass bands and dance.
The Craft Shops are not only fascinating but offer a real alternative - a wide range of specialist products including musical instruments and goods from all over the world. The widest range of gifts for all ages and occasions.

Throughout the year, an exciting calendar of events provides a focus of attention for shoppers with festivals of food, music, photography and fashion, craftshows, music and illuminations or river cruises.
