rhubarb rhubarb!

by laney5

Did you know that there is an annual rhubarb festival in Wakefield? ( January). Wakefield is the so called capital of the Rhubarb triangle (which consists of Wakefield- Rothwell - Morley) . It is intended as a celebration of forced rhubarb traditions, history and culinary delights. In its first year it lasted for 5 days, but has now been extended to 8 days. Events include gourmet meals cookery demonstrations and farm tours. We have a rhubarb corner in our garden-can't get rid of it!

Wakefield is a city in West Yorkshire. It is also a region where Castleford and Pontefract belong.

"The Grand Old Duke Of York"

The grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men.
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.

And when they were up, they were up;
And when they were down, they were down.
But when they were only halfway up,
They were neither up nor down!

Some people believe this song was written about the invasion of flanders. Some also believe it was written about Richard the duke of York at the battle of wakefield. This is the same guy that a rainbow poem i was taught at school for children to remember the colours of the rainbow. S-sir R- Richard O-of Y-york G-gave B-battle I-In V-Vain._

It boasts a ruined castle in the suburb of Sandal, famous as the battlefield where the Duke of York met his death. the nursery rhyme "The grand old Duke of York" was written about this area. Robin Hood is claimed to have hailed from "outwood" another suburb of Wakefield
