Park Hotel is Wakefield’s best kept secret. The hotel is actually a Georgian mansion called Walton Hall that is located in the middle of it’s own island and surrounded by a 26 acre lake. It was built in 1767 by Thomas Waterton, who demolished the original Elizabethan building, except for the Water Gate. The wrought iron footbridge is the only permanent access to the island. The most famous resident was Charles Waterton (1782-1865), a renowned adventurer and pioneering naturalist. He opened the world’s first Nature Reserve inside the estate’s grounds and recoded 123 species of birds here over 30 years. His research also took him to North & South America. He brought back a poison called Curare that is stilled used today for medical purposes. Most of the Nature Reserve is now a golf course which you will drive by on the way to the hotel. More information can be found here: Charles Waterton
