William Longespee
by leics
William Longespee was present when the first stones of the existing cathedral were laid; he was the first person to be buried within it.
Half-brother of King John (of Magna Carta fame), his tomb monument can be found in the South Nave Aisle. It is unusual in that the base is made of wood, with a carved stone top.
Salisbury Cathedral
by Airpunk
Salisbury Cathedral is the oldest building in the modern city of Salisbury and was built between 1220 and 1265. Only very few alterations were made during the following centuries, the largest being the addition of tower and spire in the early 14th century and the restauration of the western facade in the 19th century. This makes Salisbury Cathedral the bext example available for early english gothic architecture. The tower has the distinction of being Britain's tallest church tower. In 1668 it was stabilized by no one less than Sir Christopher Wren.
Among many attractions in Salisbury Cathedral are also Britain's largest cathedral cloisters, one of the world's oldest working clocks and the best of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was a document signed by King John which weakened the power of the king in favour of noblemen. It was the first step to the development of a constitutional monarchy and can bee seen as the basic document of british law.
Entry is free, but like in most churches, a donation is suggested for maintenance.
Spend time wandering the town
by Zmrzlina
As wonderous as the cathedral is, you shouldn't miss wandering the town. It has lots of side twists and turns and interesting shops. I was a bit tired so I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked. And my one picture of the town is a disappointment, but trust me, it is a beautiful place.
