Travel Tips for Salisbury

Salisbury Journal - local news

by LouiseTopp

The Journal which comes out every Thursday is one of the oldest papers in the South West of England. It began its business in the seventeenth century, and there is still an old steam press on display in the front window of the offices.

The paper is very informative with local news, announcements, classifieds, pictures from the past by local photographer Peter Daniels including photos from the 50's showing how much Salisbury has changed over the years, and what has disappeared, from the court lists, job vacancies, Hob Knobs Diary, Leisure Time and many more articles.

Elizabeth Gardens

by LouiseTopp

At the end of Salisbury by the River Avon is a large grassy area known as Elizabeth gardens. It started out as an allotments during the war, before being turned into a park in 1952 for the queens coronation. There's a good view of the cathedral from here, many posh back gardens from the close back out onto the river; althrough they were flooded quite badly last year.

There's also a play park here with climbing frames & slide's. During the summer, paddling used to be quite popular in the streams & the river. Now when the motor car was invented everyone headed stright for Bournemouth seafront.

A summer delight

by Lifestyles about Bishops Mill

A hcarming returant and bar, it has recently been renovated. In the evening it is transformed into a nightclub. The building was originally a former flour mill over looking the River Avon, on a much older building. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Salad because its juicy and cruncy.

The town itself.

by colin_bramso

Small enough to walk around easily, large and busy enough to be very interesting. A great example of an English country market town, with styles of architecture from the Middle Ages onwards. There are some classic beautiful half-timbered black & white buildings right in the town centre.

Salisbury Cathedral

by grandmaR

The cathedral was built all at once over just 38 years in the 1200s. It has an old clock c. 1386 (which only strikes the hour - it has no face - it is supposed the oldest working clock in the world), and inside-the-church flying buttresses to stabilize the steeple which is 123 m tall, and is tilting 75 cm to the SW.

This is because the original plans for the church only had 4 Purbeck 'marble' piers which were to support only a small lantern tower. The tower they ended up with is the tallest in England

They give our grandson an animal hunt game to play while going through the cathedral.
