I am currently a postgraduate student here reading 19th Century Studies. The photo is of Prince Edward at the front entrance of the University on 3.1.04 when he came to open the new Digital Arts Centre. Photo from my local radio station web site on the day after the visit.
Gheluvelt Park is one of Britains many formal Victorian Public Parks.
It is situated about a mile north from the city centre on the Ombersley Road.
Most major towns created public parks in the second part of the 19th century. In Worcester Gheluvelt Park changed its character in the 1920s with the addition of a grand memorial Great War (1st World War) entrance and along one side of the park a series of alms houses.
Through the park flows the small Barbourne Brook.
Between 1960 and 1990 like many of Britains formal public parks Gheluvelt Park was neglected and starved of cash. It was maintained but if repairs were needed they were not done. By the middle 1990s the value of these parks was once again being appreciated and in 2005 Worcester City Council have now obtained a goverment grant to refurbish Gheluvelt Park.
In the late 1990s the park was extended towards the River Severn and slowly a new wild flower area is being created
Wonderful intact fully covered cloisters (unlike many French ones that have open sides) that enclose a small courtyard are one of the cathedral's main attractions. The chapter house adjoins the cloisters on the southern side.
The first pillar boxes in the UK appeared in 1840. Initially they were a dark green but the present red was quickly adopted. Prior to 1840 letters and mail were paid for on receipt. The present boxes are normally round but the very early ones were octagonal. This box is outside the cathedral.

I spent 4 months here in 1987 on an exchange program from my university in New Jersey, USA to Worcester Polytechnic. This was my first trip out of the USA and really opened my eyes to the joys of travelling. Before I began school here, I spent 6 weeks backpacking around Europe alone. Doesn't sound like much for many of the VT world travellers but I was 19, alone, a woman and had only flown once in my life before this, a 2-hour flight to Orlando. So this was all pretty amazing to me, to see places I've only read about and to get the opportunity to live somewhere else besides New Jersey. Worcester will always have a special place in my heart.
