Travel Tips for Worcester

Narrowboat Hire

by ALANinWORCS69

Based in Worcester is a company called Viking Afloat.... a company specialising in Canal and waterway holidays.
They offer narrowboat hire on 4 different itineries departing from Lowesmoor Wharf in Worcester (very close to the City Centre).
Travelling along the canals of the Midlands you will experience sights and sounds you wouldn't see anywhere else.
The Worcester-Birmingham canal as the name suggests links Worcester (at The River Severn, Diglis Basin) with Birmingham. Once at Birmingham the whole network of English canals are at your disposal. It's said Birmingham has more canals than Venice!!!
What better way to explore Worcestershire than by narrowboat.... each night you can moor right next to a pub... Brilliant!!!

Riverside Walk

by ALANinWORCS69

A great way to see the sights of Worcester is to take a walk along the river around the proximity of the Catherdral. Start at the Fountains at the northwest end of Kleve Walk (named after Worcesters twin town in Germany), you can park at the college car park (pay and display, entrance via Copenhagen Street, off Deansway).
If the weathers nice, before you start try a snack or drink at the Quay restaurant (seating outside in the summer), then people watch, take in the laid back atmosphere and maybe plan your route! Directly opposite on the otherside of the river is "New Road", home of Worcestershire County Cricket Club.
Ok, so the walk...Start by heading along Kleve walk walking towards the Cathedral. It's a fairly wide footpath lined with trees and not open to motor vehicles. As you begin you pass the jetty for River trips (can get busy in summer months), continue along and you're now beneath the walls of the Cathedral with it's tower impessively imposing over the river. At the end of the Cathedral walls you come to the foot of some steps and a side entrance to the Cathedral. Carved onto the wall in this vicinity are recordings of flood water levels to reach Worcester over the centuries; one of the highest being that of the "Great Flood of 2000". The ferry (it's only a small dinghy style rowing boat!!!) can take you across the river at this point also (summer weekends only). Carry along from this point and you pass the Diglis Hotel, a Hotel/pub great for that beer stop! Further on takes you to Diglis Basin, where the Worcester-Birmingham canal reaches the River Severn.
Back to the "steps" and up will take you into the grounds of the Cathedral. You're free to wander and enter the Cathedral. This area is actually the grounds of Kings School, Worcester. Exit the grounds through Edgar Tower... turn right (50m) and this will take you to the Royal Worcester Porcelain Factory (tours) and Museum. Turn left and you walk along the front entrance of the Cathedral and finally back to Copenhagen Street car-park.

Edgar Tower

by Andrew_W_K

At the entrance to College Green and the cathedral precinct stands this sandstone gatehouse that dates from the 14th century. The name comes from what is thought to have been an earlier tower built in the 10th century by King Edgar.

The Faithful City

"Worcester Cathedral"

I was born here, although grew up elsewhere, and returned to live in Worcester for a year in my early 20's. It's still one of my favourite places.

Situated on the banks of the River Severn the city of Worcester has a rich and varied heritage. Worcester Cathedral is England's loveliest cathedral (yes, I'm biased!), with Royal tombs, Medieval cloisters, an ancient crypt and Chapter House and magnificent Victorian stained glass.
