STILL GOING UP
One more question if you don't mind. The Gatewick Airport site includes links for currency exchange for outbound travelers from the UK but not inbound. I'll need pounds for the car hire to Dover and was wondering if I should exchange them here in the US or if I could more easily do so at the airport at 7:00 am on a Monday morning.

You will find exchange facilities at Arrivals (not sure if they are open at 7am but suspect they will be, and ATMs.
It is probably better to take GBP out of an Arrivals ATM than exchange USD here....airport rates are always poor. Do tell your card provider that you will be abroad, and check that your card has logos which will work in UK ATMs (no probs with Visa and Mastercard, think Plus and Cirrus are fairly widely accepted too).

If you click on 'Airport Information'and scroll down you will get pdf links to maps of each terminal.
There are bureau de change (exchange booths) in Arrivals at both terminals, and ATMs ('cashpoints'). You'll see where on the maps.
The Travelex exchange places in both terminals are open from 04.45 - 23.59 seven days a week. Locagted in the Arrivals concourses.
Yes, do try and withdraw your pounds from an ATM vs exchanges. As a previous poster mentioned, airports are notorious for lousy exchange rates. Is it possible that your hired car would take a credit card? That's a possibility too - although you'll probably want some pounds on you from the get-go anyway so the ATM route is the best one.
Do check with your bank on the daily maximum you can withdraw as, with probable fees involved, you'll want to make as few of those as possible. I had the bank increase my daily amount (it's purposely set low in case my card is stolen) before we went to Italy and then lowered it again when we got home. And yes, make sure you have a 4-digit code and check with your bank to make sure it'll work internationally.
I would have thought the car hire would take a credit card; however, you will have to check with them beforehand. Perhaps you can pay online?
Give yourself plenty of time to check in at Gatwick airport, you normally have to check in 2 hours before your flight, and remember that some departure gates at Gatwick are quite a distance from the terminal, you could have a 20 min walk ahead of you so bare that in mind

My first time through Gatwick was in May, 1987 when I flew in on British Caledonia Airlines. Of course, I took "The Gatwick Express" into Victoria Station where it is possible to find connecting trains, to get a meal, to have a pint, to find lodging, to exchange money into English Pounds, to board the Tube into the guts of the city, etc., etc., etc. Victoria Station is the spring board into the hustle and bustle of London and England, too.
Gatwick airport is the nearest airport to me so whenever I am looking for cheap flights I always cross my fingers that departure will be from this airport.
It is easily accessible by train or car from the south coast and there are reasonably priced longstay car parks with coaches to the airport.
London Gatwick airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, but its also one of the best, with fantastic amenities and hotels on site. Including this one, which is called the Renaissance London Gatwick Hotel. The reason for telling you about this particular Hotel is its simply the best Hotel i think i have ever stayed in. Its a fantastic way to get your holiday off to a perfect start. Normally we would just book our car into a secure car at Gatwick airport park for 2 weeks while we enjoy our holiday, but this time we took advantage of there free car parking facilities and just checked in to there hotel the day before our flight, this actually worked out cheaper this way, and you get a good nights sleep before your flight, instead of driving to the airport on the day of your departure. These pages are not so much about the the airport, but about the accomadation provided at London Gatwick international airport
