Cumberland House Gatwick: B&B Gatwick
I had an overnight in Gatwick before a long flight to the USA. I have stayed here a few times and have to say that I very much doubt anyone could find a better B&B to stay in, at least not in the UK. From the extensive and freshly cooked 5 * breakfast to the comfortable beds, big fluffy towels, shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom (in bottles, not those measly sachets!) and newly refurbished bathrooms with power-showers to the little details like biscuits with your tea-making set.
The owners are delightful, friendly, and helpful, can't do enough for you and will take you to Gatwick Airport and pick you up again regardless of your flight times. On our previous visit this excellent bed and breakfast had upgraded dining room and a visitors sitting room area. This time we found that our favorite room had had a total makeover - new decor and a great new bathroom with 'wet-room' shower.
As usual our booking on-line was dealt with very efficiently - we had in fact booked four months in advance as soon a we knew our flight details to be sure we could get into our favorite B&B. Clive knew our flight times and agreed a breakfast time to suit us and took us to Gatwick airport right on time.
Unique Quality: Clive and Carmel are friendly hosts, very efficient, rooms are spotless, breakfast is great and travel to airport is well organized. I really cannot think of anything that is not worthy of an excellent rating - if anyone posts any kind of a negative comment I think the problem is with him or her not Cumberland House! Well done Carmel and Clive - I would definitely return to Cumberland House B&B just for the cozy bed and the awesome breakfast.

Gatwick Hilton: Not as it should be...
Located an easy walk from the terminal, I thought this would be a no-brainer! I came through Gatwick on my way to Croatia, and had 5-6 hours layover so I went by the Hilton, where I had a reservation for the overnight upon my return to USA, and asked if there was a day pass available so I could sleep for a few hours---the answer was more than I had paid for the room the following week! I ended up paying almost $100 US to stay in a small room for 4-5 hours.
Then, the next week upon my return, I had reserved a king size bed room for the night, but when I got to the room it was a queen. There was no foundation for the mattress---only slats, making for a VERY hard and uncomfortable bed. I filled out the form when I left, and left it with the person at the desk, and got no response whatsoever from Hilton. I had thought that Hilton was a class organization, but when bad reviews come in, they surely need to touch base with those complainers. Try one of the close-in B&B's instead of the Hilton!
Unique Quality: Hard bed

Cumberland house: A pleasant stay in Horley, Gatwick
We stayed in Cumberland house for several times. Fine accommodation and great service!
For couples or families, it is a great place to spent overnight if you are traveling.
They pick you up and drive you to the airport, almost all hours.

Travelodge: Handy For Airport
Booked one night in the Travelodge at Gatwick airport for our 2008 holiday to Greece. Paid £29 for a room for three so I suppose we shouldn't have expected too much. Having daid that, you can pay upwards of £60 a night, depending when you book.
Got a taxi from the railway station at Gatwick airport, cost £12.50!
Checked in at hotel fine, room ok, decent bathroom, double bed and bed settee. Tea and coffee. Our one big complaint was we happened to be staying on the hottest day of the year so far and the air-conditioning didn't work, nor could you open the triple glazed windows due to the hotel being situated at the end of the runway and soundproofed. WE just couldn't cool down and we all stripped off to the bare minimum. Even then, the room remained like a furnace all night. Definitely no sheets required!!
The following morning we arose in time to catch the hotel Hoppa bus, which meant we would be at the airport two and a half hours before our flight (4.45 am.) Our plans were scuppered when we were informed the bus wasn't coming as the driver was sick. We had to fork out another £8 for a taxi. Still, it was cheaper than the rate from the airport.
We ended up being at the airport three whole hours before our flight was due!
Unique Quality: Cheap, if you book at the right time.
There is a bar and restaurant, but we were too mean to use them!

London Gatwick Travel Inn: If you have to stay near Gatwick Airport
This Travel Inn is ideal if you have to catch a very early flight the next morning or arrive in a very late night flight and have to stay near Gatwick. Booking a room is very easy as this can be done by telephone or via the internet, actually on one of my stays I had not even booked and I just went in and they were able to get me a room . I paid £62 a night for a room. The rooms are quite spacious have their own central heating which you can change to your liking. They also have their own toilet/shower, Satellite TV and a kettle for tea and coffee. In the lounge you can have food ordered or have a drink at the bar. Also available is car parking.
