Gretna Green--The Marriage Capital of the UK
"Las Vegas Scottish Style"
Gretna Green is just a few miles from Annan. In case you haven't heard Gretna Greene is the instant marriage capital of the world. It all started in Scotland where young people over the age of 16 could legally marry by saying vows to each other. In 1745 Parliament prohibited such unions in England so eloping couples would journey off to Gretna, just over the border. to say their vows. Later, Parliament made the rules tougher but the legacy lingers on. Thousands upon thousands of couples have made their way here for that purpose.
For a fee you can tour the wedding museum. I did not, being happily married already. But that being said, it seems to be very popular and if you are a fan of romance novels this is the stop for you.
Visit the website below for all the information which includes a wedding cam...believe it or not!! The promotions are really spectacular. Take a tour...you will enjoy.
"Well......???"
There is our Scottish Friend Shelagh getting ready to answer that age old question....I don't think I need to repeat it. If you think you know the answer write it on a fifty pound note and send it to me in care of VT.
"The Marriage Anvil"
This is the site that made Gretna famous. Just pop in, say your vows over a smithy's anvil and live happily ever after. Meanwhile leave a few pounds behind in the shops.
