Lovely 4 days

by TripAdvisor Member LizanneUk

I have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Hackness Grange and thoroughly enjoyed it. (family of 4 - two children aged 14 & 11)Yes, it is slightly faded but for me that was part of the charm. After a slightly iffy start when the rooms we requested were unavailable, we were given two lovely rooms in the courtyard block. It seems the mix up was with the central reservations and the staff at the hotel were wonderful in sorting it all out. I suggest anyone wanting specific room requirements contact the hotel directly and not leave it up to the central reservations (who do not know the layout of the hotel). The situation of the hotel is ideal for touring the area. It has a wonderful pool and very nice tennis court. We all enjoyed the food - never had a problem with what we ordered and hardly had to wait at all. The staff were all extremely pleasant.

Lovely settings, shame about the service!

by TripAdvisor Member plash

I have just returned from a weekend in Hackness Grange. Let me say this has got to be one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in.

Cons- I received an upgrade to a courtyard room, the room was small and smelt damp. Just glad I didn't see any of the other rooms if this was an upgrade. Also there were quite a few members of staff that decided to smoke their cigarettes at the back of our room which in turn made the whole corridor smell of cigarette fumes. Night-time didn't stop them either, they just had the added item of a large flashlight which lit up the whole of our room.

Pros- The evening meal was fabulous on both occasions and the bar staff really did look after you. The pool was lovely and warm and usually had the pool to yourselves. The grounds were lovely and was located in a great place not to far away from anything.

Cons- Breakfast was unorganised the first morning and even worse the second. The first morning we sat on table 7, table 6 were still waiting for their cooked breakfast, which the waitress decided to chase up. Two minutes later their breakfasts appeared, they did comment on how they hadn't ordered what was on the plate but were that hungry that they ate it anyway. We were still waiting for our breakfast 15 minutes later, so we asked the waitress who told us our breakfasts had been given to table 6 and ours were now being done. The breakfasts arrived- it was barely cooked including the scrambled egg which was swimming around the plate. We ate what we could and then looked forward to an excellent evening meal.

Sunday's breakfast was even worse! The waitress was bringing plates out to tables and the orders were all wrong so they kept going back to the kitchen. She didn't take our order until the last in the dining room even though we'd been there one of the first. We then received our toast but no drinks. The waiter came out with our tea and small coffee pot and gave it to a party of 8 that had just come in. 10 minutes later, after our toast had gone, he came with a tea and large coffee pot just for me whilst the party of 8 had to ask for more coffee.

If the service and rooms were improved then this could be an excellent hotel but at the moment it's definately not worth the money!

Sadly, the negative reviews of this hotel are very true.

We stayed here last weekend (one night), and I have to say I was torn between bewilderment and disappointment.

I related to everything that the other reviewers on the website said. It is Fawlty Towers! However, if you go to the hotel with a sense of humour you will certainly find lots to amuse you as the staff muddle through.

For the price, I'm afraid I can't recomend this hotel at all. It has a level of "charm" that at half the price you would have been happy to tolerate but at the actual price it is far from value for money.
Of note were the following:

(i) unclean rooms;
(ii) a dated and unkempt internal appearance;
(iii) the hotel was genuinely a mess with dirty linen left lying around and rolls of carpet (presumably from the refit of one of the rooms) propped up on the landing;
(iv) a bargirl who couldn't pour a pint or knew where the bar menu was or even what was on said menu (it turned out to be two types of sandwiches);
(v) the lounge area on the first floor was used as a storage area (broken chairs, mattresses and more sheets);
(vi) breakfast served on dirty table cloths and with very slapdash service;
(vii) the "lake" was really a pond, covered in algae; the "drive" is a short and uneven road and the "pitch and put" is a, largely, overgrown field with some holes and some flags (the pool is nice though); and
(viii) we were woken at 9am on Sunday morning by a girl in jeans wanting to know what time we were leaving so she could clean it!

If you have already paid your deposit on the hotel I don't suggest you cancel because I don't think you will get your deposit back - go for the "experience". It made for a good story for me! If you haven't yet booked though, I seriously recomend you look elsewhere (there's a reason there are very few pictures on the website!). The local area has lots of genuinely lovely places and your money will be better off spent there!

read the negative reports

Having read the negative reports after booking ,we were some what concerned ,however our fears proved tottally unfouded we stayed in the garden rooms and have to say the food and service was very good the only down side was the bar prices

Lovely,lovely stay

by TripAdvisor Member WorthingSussex

Having read the reviews previously written on this website we were very anxious as we had already booked for 4 nights - however, we found the hotel itself in a wonderful setting with lake & gardens and could not fault the food and service.The hotel decor was mentioned previously to be faded, tired, shabby etc but we have travelled the world and can verify that the ambience of an older hotel was not only up to standard but didn't deserve such criticism.

nice place shame about the rest

by TripAdvisor Member SYorksYorkie

The situation is " Gods own country". The hotel was first visited twenty years ago when there were staff who were knowledgeable. All they have now are tattoos and dirty uniforms. The food was good, the service abysmal. The beds were comfortable, the furniture dirty. It could be twenty years before we go again.

Fawlty Towers!

by TripAdvisor Member sunsally

We booked for two nights between Christmas and New Year after being recommended by family who had stayed here some years ago. However we only stayed one night because the service was so bad. The hotel is lovely - in a beautiful setting, nice swimming pool, comfortable rooms (yes they are a bit jaded but it has a certain charm of a country house hotel). The food is also very good. BUT our dinner was over an hour late, the girl behind the bar said it was her first night at work and she was very inexperienced, the waiting staff were hopeless young lads who didn't seem to know what they were doing and at breakfast time they ran out of eggs and milk!!!!!! One of the waiters even admitted himself it was like Fawlty Towers!! We paid a lot of money for our stay and it was disappointing. At least we saw the funny side but I couldn't face a second night. Lots of other people complained and checked out early as well. With new staff who know what they are doing this would be a very nice hotel. At the moment the manager seems bewlidered and incompetent and his staff are not up to the job.

Wonderful Xmas

by TripAdvisor Member HappyGuest2296

Stayed 4 days for Christmas, booked around June sometime and only read the negative reviews just as we left (with fear in our hearts!).
I found everything above average, all the furniture, rooms etc were in above average condition. The food was really excellent, the dinner service was slow but its not Macdonald's!
I found the staff very willing to help in every way, sure they sometimes got the odd things wrong but what hotel these days in England doesn't?
We travel quite extensively in the UK, five times a year and I would rate this as one of the best places we have stayed.
It really is puzzling why there are negative reviews (as well as good ones).
The hotel setting is absolutely wonderful.

A place to relax

by TripAdvisor Member WLAI12

After reading the negative reviews we were a little worried about what we would find. Arived 30 mins before checkin and given our rooms straight away, our room clean and comfortable but a little faded, friends room had been renovated and was excellent. Staff friendly without being obtrusive, food good, served piping hot with just the break between courses that is necessary for a good meal. Ideal location for exploring a very beautiful part of England, pool look clean and inviting and the grounds were extensive, A Kingfisher was seen on the lake at the front of the hotel. The log fire in the lounge was inviting but one had to be quick to get the good seats. We will recommend this hotel to friends. Finally please remember staff are human beings and if you are rude and abusive to them it is possible they will react in the same way. A SMILE goes a long way to make a happy stay.
