More about Best Western The Feversham Arm

High Standard

by TripAdvisor Member Fellowtraveller55

I do not know how the Feversham Arms compares with the many other hotels in this attractive country town but you need look no further. Although rather expensive, it sets very high standards and can scarcely be faulted.
The reception desk area is somewhat cramped but it could be tidied up and made more presentable.
The food was excellent although the wine selection was not quite of the same standard. The choice for breakfast left nothing to be desired.
I had a good size room on the ground floor with plenty of storage space, a top quality TV and CD player with CD's provided.
Parking is right out side the front door.

Nice but too expensive

by TripAdvisor Member jpaulcook

We booked for a "special rate" winter stay in one of their new "suites". The rate was reduced to £300 dbb per night which was steep but even more so when the allowance for dinner barely covered 2 courses off the ALC menu. The room was very comfortable, B and O tv etc but there was building going on all around, although we weren't disturbed by it.
i suppose my grievance is hard to quantify but it was the lack of those little touches that you expect when paying that much, coupled with the constant feeling of "that is a bit of a rip-off".No canapes with drinks but £5.95 for a tiny pot of coffee after dinner.
I resolved not to write a sour review but instead wrote to the proprietor who basically told me I was wrong.
The Feversham Arms is pleasant but overpriced and needs more attention to detail- I would not stay again or recommend it to friends.

North Yorkshire hidden Gem

I had heard much about this hotel from freinds and read about it inthe press so it was a viist long overdue. The hotel is the brainchild of Simon Rhatagin who had previuosly been at Le Manoir and Seaham Hall however I was forwarned that his new venture was quite different, howeve althought it was definitely differnt phusically it still had a real warmth of service and hoispitality which can only be attributed to the management. Whilst the accomodation is simple everything you need ios close at hand. i stayed in one of the newly refurbished pool suites whihc I understand all other rooms will eventually be folowing instyle and comfort.
It was equipped with B&O televsions, aircondiyions full bathrooms with powerful shower and even a fire in the sitting area. The dinner was in the simple brasserie but the food was really tasty and I would recommend the souffle for any visitor. Helmsley is an unasuming nortyth yorkshire markjet town and although the Feversham Arms is in its heart it is still a peaceful and tranquil haven as soon as you step off the street into the hall.

a relaxing birthday treat...despite the building works

by A TripAdvisor Member

Have just got back from the Feversham Arms

Be warned, there is building work going on at the hotel (pool area is a muddy building site, and streetworks going on out front!) However, this is mentioned on their website.

We tried to book room 15 ( on 2nd floor with real fire), but it was undergoing refurbishment. Offered room 19 instead (suite on 2nd floor with woodburning stove - for the same price). It was perfect for a mid March break. Cosy stove, selection of DVDs and music piped into bathroom, L'Occitane toiletries, view of castle, trendy modern decor. See the hotel website for photos of all the rooms available.

The food was excellent, and the staff warm and welcoming.

If you want tea and coffee making facilities in your room, call reception and a hospitality tray is delivered. I don't know why one isn't placed in the rooms as a matter of course (?)

It's not cheap to stay here, but the town is lovely (market on a Friday, lots of quirky shops and delicatessens) , you get breakfast in bed at no extra charge, the reastaurant is excellent, and for a relaxing birthday treat it was perfect.

The building works look serious, and could go on for some time. Don't book a pool suite until you are sure the pool will be finished!

Deservedly popular

by TripAdvisor Member DaveRJoue

We stayed for 2 nights dinner, bed and breakast. The room was splendid, with a large, comfortable bed and top class linen. The bathroom was luxuriously appointed. The furnishings were chic as opposed to minimalist. All of the food was beautifully prepared from the finest ingredients but remained unfussy. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. Overall, it had the feeling of a small country house hotel.

Great Potential

by TripAdvisor Member nrty

Stayed in the one of the new Pool Suites for one night recently. The suites are very luxurious and beautifully done out. You get a living area with trendy fireplace and tv. There's a double bedroom with Bang & Olufsen tv, a bathroom with walk in shower and double bath and then upstairs you have a study area with a separate WC. Step outside and you have your own patio area right next to the outdoor heated pool. A quick call to reception and someone came to remove the pool cover and we were in on a coldish , Friday afternoon. It was a real treat to swim outdoor in October.
We had a meal in the restaurant and was moderately impressed with the food although it didn't compare to the Burlington at the Devonshire Arms where we had eaten earlier in the week. Having said that it was half the price. We also had afternoon tea in the hotel lounge which was nice.
Overall I'd say this small hotel has real potential and I'm not surprised to see it on the shortlist for the Yorkshire Life awards. I think they've got a few teething problems with the new rooms - new fires don't work, music doesn't pipe through from DVD player into bathroom (we brought our Ipod + speakers so wasn't really that fussed) light fittings were hanging out of the bathroom ceiling. Little things which don't really bother you but if they want to be the best they have to get right.
We will be visiting again soon.

Luxury with some nice touches

by TripAdvisor Member chipie73

We stayed at the Feversham for our wedding anniversary in September and were very impressed with the nice touches, including being upgraded to a suite at no extra cost !

There were some minor glitches such as no towels in the bathroom and an extended wait to be seated for dinner (we had a pre-booked reservation) but these were all dealt with by very polite and efficient staff.

The real delight is the restaurant and the new Maitre'd in particular who couldn't do enough to make us feel relaxed whilst also explaining about the food and wine and where it came from which I thought was a nice touch.

All in all a very nice hotel and well worth a visit.

Great food, good hotel...but the bells the bells!

by TripAdvisor Member toonsteve

I stayed here with my girlfriend to celebrate an anniversary so we were looking for something a bit special...and I think that's what we got.

Don't go here if you want a vibrant town. The village is very quiet and picturesque and the hotel is an old-style countryside place so don't expect modern, cool and funky. The staff was excellent and the room was clean and very comfortable (Bang and Olufson TV, speakers in the bathroom). However, it was not big and was quite basic in other ways. The TV reception was rubbish but I was informed that that was beyond the control of the hotel.

There are no tea/coffee making facilities. Don't miss out! You have to call for a complimentary hospitality tray (which arrived immediately) and has everything you need.

The food here is stunning! We stayed dinner, bed and breakfast and dinner was outstanding with extremely attentive but unobtrusive service. You are positively encouraged to have breakfast in your room (no charge) and it is brilliant! Each item is ordered individually so you can construct your own breakfast and the qualilty matches the variety.

Be prepared for an early alarm call on a Sunday! The church bells ring and ring from about 7am! Nothing the hotel can do about it but if you are a light sleeper or need a lie in beware!

Overall, stay here if you are a foodie. Hard to beat the food here and the food in the pub across the square seemed almost as good! I wish I'd stayed longer to find out.

A Yorkshire retreat..

by TripAdvisor Member Ambergatekirsten

We stayed on a midweek winter offer, and were upgraded on arrival to one of the top rooms (due to building work going on I suspect - kept us very happy!) As such, it represented good value, however I'd find the prices very steep otherwise.

The suite was lovely (no 19 in the eaves), with top quality furnishings. 14 cushions on the bed (yes, we counted) probably unnecessary however.... Dinner in the restaurant was good, but given it was midweek in March it was very quiet. Room service breakfast was great - a real treat.

Helmsley itself is a beautiful village in a lovely location, but beware most of the local attractions are shut until mid-March

Fabulous Appearance But Mixed Feelings Overall

by TripAdvisor Member UK_Honeymooners

I booked the hotel for my fiance's birthday and decided to splash out on a pool suite. It was a little more than I wanted to pay but the website looked fabulous and the staff were very helpful on the phone so I decided to push the boat out.

We arrived early and we signed in with the staff who told us we could check in at 3pm so we decided to take full advantage of the loung area and lunch time menu.

We sat ourselves down in the lounge and were told someone would be with us shortly to show us the menu. We had to wait a small while but we weren't in a hurry so were happy to wait. The sandwiches we ordered were very nice indeed on delicious farmhouse style bread.

However we did wait a considerable time and when trying to find a member of staff to get extra drinks they seemed in very short supply. The bar was unmanned and we again were told someone would be with us shortly and had to wait.

Just before 3pm we saw many people checking in and being show to their rooms so we headed for reception. Before we could say anything we were curtly told our room wasn't ready and they would come and find us and it shouldn't be too long. They did offer to take our bags but we just took a seat back in the lounge. We waited approximately 20-30 minutes before someone came to get us and showed us to our room.

I had told them the trip was for my partners birthday and had asked for a bottle of wine to be placed in the room on arrival. However I did have to call to get this.

We stayed in room 24, a poolside suite at the top end of the price range and it was very nice. It is very modern, which is what we like in a room and the bedroom and bathroom were fantastic, I had a long soak in the bath that evening and fabulous power shower the next morning. The bed was really comfortable with high quality duvet and pillows. However there were a couple of minor things. The living room is great but my fiance said he couldn't help but feel he was in a chalet with the glass doors (guess it is a poolside suite though) and the sofa and chair weren't the most comfortable I have sat on, although they do look great.

I'm wondering if we stayed in the same room as another reviewer here as the control in the bathroom was hanging off the wall in ours also. The tiling on the side of the bath was also poorly finished and the hygiene bag unit was laid on the floor. The cables to the tv were half covered by a protective tube and half uncovered, which wasn't a good look and probably not all that safe and some kind of large power adaptor was hidden behind the curtain with the cable leading under the patio door and outside (not sure what that was for but a little unsightly?) I thought the large white aircon / heat units rather spoiled the overall look too.

That evening we headed to the lounge area for our pre-dinner drinks. We were told to arrive for 7.45 to be seated at 8pm. We were presented with the menus and told of the specials by the hotel manager and a bit later a waiter took our order.

We were seated just after 8.30pm and the food was again very nice. However again the service was again little slow. We weren't in any major hurry but having stayed at many other similar places we felt the timing could have been a little better. The staff were also quite reserved and the service didn't feel warm and welcoming as the brochure claims it to be. I appreciate there is a certain etiquette in hotels of this standard but my partner and I are quite chatty, friendly people, but we felt little rapport with the hotel team. It felt more mechanical than welcoming.

Breakfast the next morning was again very slow, it took quite some time to receive a pot of tea and toast and the cooked breakfast seemed to take ages.

The staff were very helpful on the phone at the time of booking and the wine and hostess tray we requested in the room did arrive quickly. I would say the location is fabulous, pool and general surroundings on the whole are very good.

But overall the atmosphere in the hotel, even with guests felt quite reserved and 'stiff', I went away to relax but felt a little on edge. I think it is almost there but for a hotel of this calibre and at rooms of that cost I felt there was just a little lacking from the overall experience. I have experienced much better hospitality elsewhere and for what I paid (just over £500) I would have expected more.

Even on checkout I would have expected "Have you enjoyed your stay?", "Hope to see you again", or even "Have a safe journey home" but there was nothing, I was the one who had to say thank you and goodbye.
