SLIEVE DONARD HOTEL - NORTHERN IRELAND: HOT ROOM - AND IT WASN'T THE SAUNA

by DAO

So, expecting a wonderful review of this grand luxury hotel and its amazing £15 million refurbishment? Well either you have the wrong review, the wrong hotel or both. With that kind of money you would think they would have put in comfortable beds and air-conditioning. They didn’t. I couldn’t sleep due the heat in the room and the bad mattress. Even after I opened both windows to the partial extent physically allowed – I was hot. Only the mosquitoes came in, not a cool breeze. I don’t care how good your lobby, spa, bar and restaurant are – you go to a hotel (any hotel) to sleep!

Did I mention they have a great lobby, spa, bar and restaurant?

When I drove up to this imposing Victorian masterpiece I was really impressed. Outside this is a beautiful hotel. It sits right on the beach and looks right up to it’s namesake – Slieve Donard. Slieve Donard is the highest peak in Northern Ireland and the scenery is dramatic. Shame about my room.

On the plus side I would recommend spending a day here. The SPA and gym are awesome. Brand new, fully equipped and lots of creature comforts. They provide robes, great changing rooms, fantastic Jacuzzi, pool and steam room. The interior of the hotel is quite nice as well. I had breakfast here even though I was ‘room only’. They don’t do a lot of checks. The buffet is massive with everything from great tasting Irish bacon, sausages, many egg dishes and fresh fruit. The whisky with the oatmeal was my personal favourite. It certainly put a kick-start into my day.

Yes this is a great hotel by day. At night it is a different matter.

My room was more than £100 ($150+ US). It looked ok. Oldish bathroom with a big deep tub and some nice toiletries. 2 beds, mini-bar, a large closet, mirrors, TV, phone, desk, chairs and a table. Then I tried to go to sleep. The room was already hot. It was summer after all. I went to look for the thermostat. None found. I rand the desk and asked about changing the temperature. They knew I was asking for the heat to be put on. They told me to open a window. How thoughtful. I open both windows that opened on to the back of an annex. Blocking off useful things like views and wind. No air, no breeze, just sweat. And the mattress sucked. Both of them. Lumpy, uncomfortable. Terrible.

Had I known I could have booked into one of the nice B&B along the beach road just opposite the hotel. There were several. Instead I stumped up the extra money to get more comfort. Well I was short-changed.

My suggestion – find somewhere else and save the cash and have a good nights sleep. Do use the SPA. And have breakfast of course.

• Dramatic location and gardens next to the Mourne Mountains and the sea
• Great history with a small (free) museum room
• Excellent breakfast buffet
• Free newspapers in the lobby
• Excellent modern SPA and gym facilities
• A great looking bar for coffee or a nice pint of Gunniess
• Great location for a wedding reception or business meeting

EUROPA HOTEL (BELFAST): THE MOST BOMBED HOTEL IN EUROPE

by DAO

Thankfully today, the only thing that gets bombed in this hotel now are the guests in the bar. With 2 excellent bars, that’s easy to do. The Europa is THE hotel to stay in and be seen at. When Royalty and Diplomats come here, this is where they stay. In my case, my job was kind enough to let me stay. So what is the history? It was opened in July 1971 and was clearly THE luxury hotel in Belfast. The proletarian IRA saw this as just about everything they didn’t like and promptly started setting off bombs in, out and nearby the hotel. Over 30 times they forced redecorations. Fortunately that’s all they did.

Today it has been massively refurbished and redecorated, without any outside help, to a luxurious finish. The rooms are compact, but full of good things like supersoft beds, great monsoon showers and flat-screen TV’s. Yep, I have pictures of all that!

This 4-star hotel has 240 bedrooms, including the 56 Executive Suites. If you simply must work, you also get WiFi internet access.

Each room has:
International direct dial telephone
Room service available (7.00am - 2.00am)
Tea & coffee making facilities
Trouser presses or irons & ironing boards
Hair dryer
Laundry & dry-cleaning available
Fantastic soap & shampoos in your bathroom
Lots of huge fluffy white towels

Please note: The Gym facilities are elsewhere and keep short hours, ask for details

You get:
• A great nights sleep
• A fantastic buffet breakfast that will fill you up for the day
• You are in THE hotel!
• Great lounge bar that’s a real nightspot
• Free newspapers, magazines and maps in the lobby

CROWBERRY GUEST HOUSE: GOOD FOR BUSINESS

by DAO

When I found out I would be working on the Isle of Lewis (Scotland) I set about finding what I wanted. A quiet B&B with a bit of luxury while still being within company budget. I booked the Crowberry and am glad I did. Situated 7 miles north of Stornoway, it only has 4 bedrooms and is quiet. The beds were the best I slept in during a continuous 3 months of business travel. My room was really great. Huge mirrors, large closets, its own steam iron & board, remote TV and ‘invisible’ heating. My bathroom had a heated floor. Coupled with great hot showers and with my in-room coffee; I set off each day in a good mood. That is after my excellent breakfasts. Fresh fruit, fired breakfasts and/or porridge. Just order the night before and it’s just outside your door. The free Wi-Fi was a help for work. Are you a dog or cat person? They have 2 friendly dogs and 2 friendly cats you can visit anytime. The best thing? SLEEP! Yes, a good night’s sleep every night. You really have to have a car to stay here, but town is just down the road.

The owners, Alasdair and Lisa Maclean, are a class act and made me feel welcome. I highly recommend Crowberry as a Business Stay B&B.

• Great beds and bedding
• Awesome breakfasts including hot salmon, fresh fruit, fried breakfast, haggis and porridge
• Packed lunches, picnics and/or flasks of hot drinks on request
• Great ‘library’ covering the island including restaurants and events
• Scottish Arran Aromatics toiletries (soap/shampoos)
• Underfloor heating in the bathroom
• Steam iron, ironing board, hairdryer
• Excellent mirrors and closets
• TV/DVD/Alarm Clock radio
• Business meetings/lunches up to 12 people on request
• QUIET

Europa: Most Bombed Hotel in Town

by Goner

The Europa is a very nice hotel. The service was good, the people at the desk were a little brusk. The Europa Hotel was the only hotel in Belfast for the main part of the Troubles so came under constant attack by militant republicans. Now fully renovated it is one of the finest hotels in the city.

We had a great view out our bedroom window of a bustling Belfast. The hotel restaurant had excellent food.

Europa Hotel has a bar/lounge. wireless Internet access and secretarial services. Event facilities include conference rooms. The staff can arrange dry cleaning/laundry services. Additional amenities include valet parking, multilingual staff, and room service.

Guestrooms haveiPod docking stations, complimentary newspapers, and televisions. Business-friendly amenities include wireless Internet access (surcharge), desks, and direct-dial phones. Bathrooms provide hair dryers and complimentary toiletries.

All guestrooms at Europa Hotel are non-smoking.

THE ONLY FLOATING HOTEL IN THE UK

by DAO

The Floatel Northwich is the UK's only floating hotel. Sounds fantastic. Do not get too excited. Even in their own brochures they say it is for the business traveller. Do not think Cruise Ship. Think floating modular mobile home. It is situated on a calm and wide section of the River Weaver, between 2 swinging iron bridges. Canal boats going inland and boats going towards the sea moor side by side just outside your window. It is a quiet and relaxing budget hotel. They have all the amenities for a business traveller including a desk, a restaurant with a view and an upstairs bar. The staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel is also located just a short walk from a town centre full of shops, takeaways and pubs.

So here is the overview:
* Genre: basic, clean, a little worn looking
* 60 fully equipped en-suite bedrooms
* Interactive TV (Internet access, PlayStation, Exclusive Movies)
* Hairdryer
* Tea/coffee facilities in room
* FREE car parking,
* CCTV
* Disabled and Ladies only spaces near to reception
* AM/FM Radio
* Direct Dial Phone

Restaurants and Bar:
Placed together upstairs with a view of the river. The Waterside Restaurant offers a choice of fixed price 3 course carvery dinner, or a la carte dishes. The Swingbridge Bar also offers a wide selection of baguettes/sandwiches and hot dishes. They do grills and they did smell quite tasty.

Breakfast - served from 7:00 to 10:00 am
Lunch 12:00 to 2:00 pm
Dinner 7:00 to 9:45 pm

A small selection of restaurants (about 2) are a short walk away.

It is situated 5 miles from Junction 19 of the M6. So it is convenient for business people working in the North West. It allows tourist-minded people easy access to Warrington, Liverpool and Manchester.

Fold Farm Guest House: Ideally placed for a visit to Chatsworth Show

by gilljay

The rooms are appointed to an extremely high standard and very comfortable. No evening meals but the local pub is only a five minute walk into Beeley.
Breakfast is of the best quality English bacon and eggs etc. and is served around a huge family farmhouse table.
Maureen and Vince are wonderful hosts who will welcome you to their home with a pot of tea and cakes taken in the garden (weather permitting).
I have recommended this B& B to many people.

If you are planning to visit the county of Derbyshire with the Peak National Park and the Blue John Mines and looking for somewhere to stay then look no further.
Fold Farm is not only a most excellently appointed B & B, but also only a stone's throw from Chatsworth House.
Famous for its fountains, Chatsworth House also hosts an annual country fair (see my pages).
Your host, Vince, is also a champion fly fisherman responsible for training the Welsh Youth International Team and will happily give lessons to guests.

Mill Cottage: Rustic Charm

by Wowmoment

A converted Mill near Frome, Somerset provides and ideal break for 2 - 20+ people in various houses and cottages. Breaks can be booked from 3 days.

I am a big fan of self catering, I like the freedom it gives. Wear what you like for breakfast!

This group of cottages is a picturesque delight. The rooms are all to a high standard but comfortable and in keeping with the rural environment.

The cottages are well placed for visiting Bath, Salisbury, Glastonbury, Wells etc.

Crumplebury Farm: The Essence of Rural England

by Wowmoment

Just the name is enough to set the imagination off. Set in deepest Worcestershire this farm is available to rent from3 nights fully furnished. It sleeps up to 11.

Picture yourself sitting at a huge kitchen table in front of the Aga enjoying a home cooked dinner and drink after a days walking through delightful countryside.

This is Crumplebury. Can't wait to go back.

Battlesteads Hotel, Wark: Northumberland Retreat

by Elsenhameileen

Lovely village location and a convenient centre for exploring one of England's most spectacular counties. Warm welcome, friendly staff and excellent service. Comfortable rooms with well-equipped en-suites. Excellent food and imaginative menus - most food is locally sourced; good, well-priced wine list and a nice choice of well-kept real ales. Two of our party were vegetarians and were pleased with the choice of dishes. Super breakfast buffet and a smashing 'full-English' to set you up for the day. Pleasant bar and terrace for outdoor drinking in summer.

The owners have recently installed a very efficient geothermal heating system and added a large conservatory. I was pleased to note the use of eco-friendly cleaning products and of fairtrade foods. The walled garden is attractive to wildlife with bird feeders, nest boxes, and bat boxes. You are likely to be woken up by the screech of a pheasant - much nicer than an alarm clock!
