Horses!

Horse racing at Musselburgh, near Edinburgh. Its only an hour away by road, and easy enough by train as well.
Small racecourse, but good facilities (corporate and public).
I was there 3rd week in November ('06) for a national hunt (jumps!) meeting. Had to start 12.20 because it gets dark so early. Lunched at 11.30!
Picked 2 winners from 7, so made £9 on an investment of £35. Better than working!
Good social day! Warm clothes in winter, enough cash, binoculars...
Black Rock 5

Do I categorise this under "extreme sports", "beach activities", "surfing" or "other". It qualifies under all 4.
It's an annual event in May each year, dates depending on the tides. The race starts in Kinghorn (beside the Ship Tavern) and you run down to the beach, then out across the sand to the Black Rock and back. 4.5 miles roughly.
Finish is also at the pub (and believe me, that's a good idea)!
800 entered in 2009. 730 finished (some probably didn't start, and a few will have drowned en route). I was 693rd in 47 minutes.
It was very tough going, but fun in a perverted way. It was a beautiful sunny evening, with not even a breath of wind. I would have appreciated a little breeze!
Lots of photos on the website. Running stuff, obviously.
You will be running through water, so bear in mind to bring a change of footwear etc if you don't live locally!
Changing facilities provided.
a find!
by iaint about Dunnikier House Hotel
I've been to this place often recently for breakfast - a business networking event - and one of the happy networkers recommended I try lunch/dinner.
Had an excellent lunch there this week. A beetroot, goat's cheese & chicory salad, then chicken, then panna cotta with blueberries.
Good service, pleasant place & good food.
Can't comment on prices - my client paid after he'd picked my brain dry. The beetroot, goat's cheese & chicory salad. Really good!
