Mellon Udrigle: Camping Allowed

We drove to Mellon Udrigle on the motorbike after booking in at the caravan site at Laide. This is a narrow road which we opted not to take the van down, although when we arrived at the beach, we realised lots of folks had negotiated the road towing caravans as camping was allowed behind the beach!!

Just before the beach, we were held up by sheep manouvreing. A local family were moving a large flock of sheep up the road into a field, for dipping.. It seemed to be a tricky operation because at least six people and various vehicles were involved! All good fun to watch....

There is a small car park for the beach but the camping is through a gate and down a rutted track, just behind the beach. Pitching is anywhere and everywhere and it was indeed a popular location. Had we known about this place and planned to camp here, we would have been disappointed, as we couldn't see anywhere level or that we could have accessed without too much grounding out. Certainly all the prime pitches were taken.

The beach is beautiful with white sand and as the sun was shining, a brilliantly blue sea. Folks were out and about on the beach and there was even a small hovercraft which we later heard and saw from our camp.

Unique Quality: No facilities, not even a tap and for this privilege you pay £6 a night. This seems a bit of a con to me, I would at least expect water to be available for that price. Seems like the local landlords have cottoned on to the fact that they can charge people what they fancy.

Still, we are talking about a most spectacular location.

Gruinard Bay Caravan Park: A Great Spot

This site fitted the bill perfectly for us, it had everything we required at the right stage of our travelling!! This mainly was to be able to launch our boat and catch fish, which we did.

The site has a few statics with the touring area to the other side of these. The best pitches look out over the beach with further pitching set back on the other side of the access road. It's all reasonably compact and the site tends to fill up towards the end of the day, most people being in motorhomes and touring and then empty out in the mornings.Having said this, there was a family camped next to us in a magnificent tent with a small motorhome and they were there for a couple of weeks and came every year.

Facilities are good, dish washing, laundry, excellent showers, electric hook ups and a nice beach to play on!!

This site certainly filled up in the evening and booking is advisable in peak season, although we just turned up, admittedly early in the day.

Unique Quality: Quiet beachside location with beautiful views across Gruinard Bay to the mountains beyond. Superb fishing from the boat as well.

There is even an old ruined chapel and grave yard to wander around.

£12 a night for the two of us without electricity which is more than we would normally pay, but it suited our purposes.

Open April to October.

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Laide campsite, Scottish...

Laide campsite, Scottish Highlands. You really need a car to get around this area, unless you're a very fit cyclist/walker...

Unique Quality: If you really want to get away from it all, you certainly can here! Only one shop/post office nearby and one or two small hotels. And then nothing for quite a while! If that's what you're after and just want to be right by the beach and in an excellent location for walking then Laide is as good a place as any.
