Close places to see around Loughborough

by CathieLeone

I will be staying with Aunt in Loughborough. Would like to take day trips. Also want to take the bus to London and stay overnight during our stay. Any suggestion? Thanks

Leicester, of course. A friendly city, with very good shopping and much more to see there from a historical point of view than might be imagined and brilliant Indian restaurants. I have a Leicester VT page.

There are some very pleasant villages and good walks fairly near to Loughborough itself: Quorn, Swithland, Newton Linford and the lovely Bradgate Park (childhood home of Lady Jane Grey, England's '10-day queen', now in ruins but its parkland provides excellent walking). You may have to go into Leicester and out by bus to these places.

Further afield, you coud get train or long-distance bus to Warwick (superb castle, lovely town) or Stratford-on-Avon:

www.nationalrail.co.uk for all train times and fares

www.nationalexpress.com for long-distance bus times, fares and booking

http://www.warwick-castle.co.uk/ Expensive, but really worth the money......allow at least 3 hours for a visit.

Calke Abbey is not too far, and would be possible by bus. The 'getting there' link on this page tells you how:

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-calkeabbey

Calke is especially interesting, because it shows an English 'stately home' as so many of them were. The family was rather odd, and the place was more or less untouched for centruies before the National Trust bought it for the nation. It is full of 'things', and absolutely fascinating. Lovely parkland too.

Hope this helps a bit...there are lots more places, of course, but much depends on your specific interests.

Nottingham - good for shopping and there are several toursity things to do. Stamford is not too far away - this is one of my favourite English towns - a beautifully preserved Georgian town on a river.
The train to London is a much better option - have a look at the East Midlands Trains website - they have some offers on trains to London.

Travel Tips for Loughborough

Thank you Medoc.

by A2002

In the midlands, the word "medoc" is used quite frequently. For example, when you go to a fish and chips shop, you can say "Cheers medoc" or "Thank you medoc". I would say this is the street language and this word is popular in the midlands only.

Trip to Melton Morbray.

by A2002

Take a bus to Melton Morbray on a Saturday. There's a small market in Melton Morbray. It is a place famous and home for pork pie. Go there and dun forget to have a bite of the famous original pork pie. Melton Morbray is also a home for the British Stilton cheese.
