A Special Place For That Special Someone

Lynton and Lynmouth and I go back many years now and the villages themselves have always been special to me and The Rising Sun in recent years has become a familiar friend under Tony and Clare's stewardship tho' I'd never actually stayed there, just eaten and drank. This time round a very special person had entered my life and for that person only a special place would do and The Rising Sun was just that. A warm and genuine welcome from both Clare and Tony, totally informal check-in and then up the narrowest of creaky flights of wood-panelled stairs to a warm, beautifully presented bedroom lit by the early evening sun through the mullioned window overlooking the harbour. The modern touches of decor blend perfectly with the room's original character, each complementing the other without effort - first impressions do so count for so much and our original plan for an overnight stop immediately became extended to 2 days.

This was simply perfect, perhaps even transcending the word itself. People do make places and here the staff and owners just made us feel so at home. The food was superb, both formal dining in the candlelit wainscotted restaurant and less formally in the buzzy little bar. The little garden out the back a secluded spot overlooking the bay and the comfortable sofas in the lounge with much a similar view added little touches of space. This place is definitely well recommended if you want somewhere small and intimate to share with that special person in your life.

Unique Quality: How CAN I "describe any outstanding characteristics"? Everything was outstanding: the harbourside location with its boats alternately dry-docked or bumpily awash as the tides ebbed and flowed; the food to die for; top-class wines; perfectly kept beer; good company; comfortable warm bed; excellent service, ach the list could go on forever..........let's just say "Better than Perfect!" and be done with that :)

Nice stay at a quirky inn

We stayed at the Rising Sun Inn for a romantic break and had a nice time. The small restaurant is good although some dishes are quite expensive, some overpriced. The service of the more experienced staff is good, inevitably not so from the newer ones.
The bedroom was quaint and well furnished although a little small. The head receptionist was helpful and gave us lots of ideas for walks and places to visit.
This is a very old inn and because of this it will not suit all. The stairs and corridors are very narrow and steep, floors are uneven and sloping and not easy to negotiate.
The public bar which is very nice but a little smokey does very nice bar food.

Unique Quality: Olde charm inn
Nice positon by small harbour
Parking difficult and and the nearest car park was a walk away
A little quirky
Central location
Beautiful and dramatic coastline
Exmoor National Park on your doorstep

Olde World Charm at the Rising Sun Inn

A cosy inn of some 20 bedrooms all nicely decorated and situated in the centre of Lynmouth.
There is no onsite parking, which could be a problem as a pay and display parking was at the other end of the Esplanade.
Back to the Rsing Sun Inn...the staff are mostly from Eastern Europe, the rooms were clean and comfortable if some a little small. The breakfast offered was well cooked and the evening meals were also of a good standard but expensive with small portions and average desserts. I would recommend eating at the Crown pub in Lynton where the food was much better and half the price.

Unique Quality: Lynmouth makes an ideal location from which to explore the Heritage Coastline and xmoor National Park. The Rising Sun has olde world charm and is set by the harbour with some of the rooms, but not all, having sea views across Lynmouth Bay.
