More about Newby Bridge Hotel
We have just returned from a 3 night break to the Newby Bridge Hotel and I would like to thank the staff for their very helpful attitude and gracious assistance. The friendliness and unfailing willingness help of the staff was much appreciated. Our party consisted of my elderly parents, my husband and myself and 3 children. The rooms were very pleasant with comfortable beds. The 3 course evening meal was excellent and the buffet style breakfast was first class. We have stayed at the Hotel on several occasions over the last 14 years all of which have been pleasant experiences, but this was by far the best of them all. Thank you all once again for making our stay so enjoyable.
New Year chaos
Went to the Newby Bridge Hotel for there 3 night NEW YEAR package. We booked based on there website which gave an impression of a wonderful break - bucksfizz on arrival etc.
The reality was quite different. Rooms were not ready on arrival. No bucksfizz just blank faces from staff. Very short staffed. Young barman left in charge on final night shut the bar at 11.10 refusing to sell anymore drinks on the basis he was the only one there and was tired. Fine you might say, time for bed. Oh no music blared till 1am. I dont mind a sing along but surely residents can buy a drink to have with the apparently impromtu sing along on New Years Day. Instead we went to bed but couldn't sleep because of the noise.
Room only ran boiling hot water so had to poor cold in using a glass and water from the sink. Seriously on New Years eve i stood for 15 minutes emptying glass by glass of cold water into the bath! Crazy for what looks like a really good hotel. Jacuzzi in spa pool was cold and I mean cold - you shivered as you used it. Only went in because the pool itself then felt warm after being in a cold jacuzzi.
Empty condom wrapper on the floor in our room on arrival. Advertised elements of the New Year package such as bucksfizz and quizzes didnt happen. All in all a real let down considering the price. Only cost a tad more to go to the swan hotel across the road and we really wished we had.
In fairness the probs were down to poor management - well no management! It was basically bar staff running the place as best they could and they were honest enough to say the manager didnt give a monkeys. (They actually used a slightly different phrase - honest of them but unprofessional???) The gala dinner itself was fabulous and almost made up for other disappointments but it was a strange and expensive trip to Newby Bridge Fawlty Towers. If everywhere else is booked then go for it but it really is not great!
Ok we hope that you find this review helpful as there are alot of mixed comments about this hotel. Me and my partner stayed at the Newby Bridge this weekend and first things first, it was about 7pm when we arrived and our room WAS ready. The carpark is small but there were spaces available and 4x4's were parked with success.
We entered reception which looks just like the picture on the website and not a whiff of damp, the receptionist was very helpful explaining about the leisure facilities, times for breakfast etc and we then booked our evening meal. She also explained that the bar is been refurbished which we were not aware of on the booking but throughout our stay we were not disturbed by any noise from this and other arrangements were made so that you could have a drink in the evening by sitting in one of the large rooms either side of reception.
We went up to our room a four poster Jacuzzi suite and I must say that I was slightly disappointed as the decor was a bit dated, but loads of storage was provided and lots of choice of drinks on the hospitality tray which makes a change as there was also plenty of milk! and we had a beautiful view of the gardens. The bathroom, yet again was slightly dated but it did what it said on the tin so to speak, lovely big sink and complimentary shower gel etc, the bath was really deep but did take forever to fill (but you are on holiday so what’s the rush) Shower wasn’t great but yet again was ok.
We then went down for our evening meal and were seated at our table and were able to browse the menu, all of the dishes sounded delicious and the food was amazing, the presentation was great and the food was gorgeous 10/10.
Some of the staff are foreign but all of the staff were friendly and more than happy to help.
The breakfast is a self service and you are provided with tea and toast on your table and there is a selection of yoghurt, juices, fruit, cereal and fried breakfast all of which yet again were gorgeous.
We went and had a look at the leisure facilities and it looked just like the pictures on the internet yet perhaps smaller than you would like, unfortunately we didn’t have chance to try them out but the guests that were using the facilities did seem to be enjoying them.
We enjoyed our stay at the hotel and our highlight was deffinatly the standard of service and the food. It was such a relaxing trip away!!
Hotel??!! Hovel more like!!!
Husband and I went here for a romantic anniversary break, expecting a luxurious couple of days. What a laugh!
I can only imagine that any favourable comments on this website are fake and written by the management as the place was filthy, the service was terrible, food was dire etc etc etc. Not one positive thing can I say about it.
We wish that we'd done as others have, and checked out on arrival as it was about as luxurious as staying in a youth hostel!! A letter of complaint that I subsequently wrote to the management was completely ignored.
Do yourself a favour and book somewhere else. A totally dreadful experience.
Oh what a disappointment
Not at all what we expected from the very slick website for this hotel. Arrived to hear earlier arrived guests complaining about room size and shabbiness and requesting a move or their deposit back.
Chaotic reception area with overstressed receptionist trying to cope with influx of guests. Was polite but not particularly professional.
We had booked a garden view room with four poster bed.... rather shabby, small and dated with a cheap chainstore fourposter bed. TV was decent size but the remote control was disgustingly filthy and sticky. Clean cotton linen and ample supply of towels. Tiny bathroom, but adequate. Shower was either very hot or very cold - difficult to regulate and hardly a power shower. Really glad we had not paid the premium for a "lake" view room. The "lake" was on the other side of the very busy main road and then only a tiny end spur of lake Windemere.
Food was ok and to be fair the foreign kids staffing the restaurant were excellent, although they always seemed to be working - waiting at tables, cleaning rooms. Self service cold buffet for first course wasnt too clever and the second course tought and overcooked (but I guess it was a Sunday night and possibly the chef was off duty). Dessert was fine. Horror of horrors though - no table linen and paper napkins and the table was so sticky that anything put on it stuck to it. Not what you would expect from a 3 star hotel - ok for cheap pub grub, but for a £22.50 menu really disappointing. Overpriced Irish coffee - £6.95 arrived in a tumbler, spilled over the tray and rather like a latte with whisky in it somewhere... horrible.
Unfortunately our room was situated over the swimming pool in the annexe (out the back and overlooking the appalling staff accommodation old mobile homes). The hum of the pool pump and also the jacuzzi being used kept us awake.
Breakfast was the best meal - good sausages and bacon, and plenty of it. The smell of stale cooking fat did take the edge off our appetites though.
All in all a very disappointing break - and the website could possibly be called a little over ambitious. An experience not to be repeated.
Not was it says on the tin!
We booked this hotel after seeing the beautiful pictures on the website!
We were a little daunted when we found the comments on this website prior to our stay.
We arrived at the hotel around 1pm, the car park was virtually empty - which felt like an ominous sign. Workmen were refitting windows to the bar area and the reception was dark and tired, with a pile of towels laid out on a table at the entrance (we were later asked to take these for use in the ‘leisure spa’).
The Australian receptionist was very pleasant and explained that our room wouldn’t be ready until 2pm. We decided to wander round the hotel.
The ‘Leisure Spa’ was deserted and is much darker and smaller than the brochure or website suggest. The ‘Gym’ (using the term loosely) comprised of about 4 pieces of equipment which were dusty and the one and only treadmill was out of use. The corridors are dark and in desperate need of a lick of paint!
We had a drive around for an hour. When we came back at 2.30 our room was ready. We were directed (armed with our towels) to a room at the end of the corridor – just before the entrance to the ‘Leisure Spa’. The four posted bed was of the white tubular kind with a rather strange fluorescent pink duvet cover which did not match with either the canopy over the bed or the curtains. The windows were left wide open (which in few of the previous damp reviews gave us some concern). The room had a square table – which I presume was the dressing table and an old leatherette chair – which wouldn’t have looked out of place in a 1970s pub. The mirrored double wardrobe set in the wall finished of the look together with the very basic and cold bathroom.
We decided not to stay and went back to reception. Were we were greeted by a toddler eating a slice of buttered bread behind the reception desk and a lady in ill fitting jeans and t shirt. We explained our concerns about the room and without hesitation or even an attempt to appease – she offered a full refund of our deposit there and then.
We made our way to the Low Wood Hotel, where friends of ours had stayed previously. What a difference! Slightly more expensive – but well worth it! Absolutely fabulous!
Very good value for money
Initially we were given a very poor, old fashioned room that was well overdue for refurbishment. However due to a problem with the water supply we were placed in a beautiful room which was well prepeared and clean looking. Staff were very helpful and delt with the few problems we had in an efficient and polite manner. Food was of a very good standard always served piping hot and well presented. Service in the restaurant was excellent. Overall a very enjoyable stay and incredible value for money.
Ignore all the negative reviews!!!!! The Hotel is Fab!!!!!
We arrived at the hotel after a very long road and were greeted by a very friendly Receptionist.
We filled out the paperwork and were then given a bit of an introduction to the hotel including how to find the leisure facilities, times and location of breakfast etc. etc.
We were taken to a beautiful room in the 'annex' which was light, airy and spacious. After a nice relaxing swim in the very well kept pool we headed back into the main building for our evening meal........................ The food was incredible, the staff very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere great!
We did have one hitch while we were there and that was a water problem (No water) and it was down to the water board so what can I say? It's not the hotels responsibility although they were doing there best to get the problem resolved as quickly as possible. There was a burst pipe in the area which was completely out of the hands of the poor receptionist who was trying her absolute best to apologise to a string of complaining guests. If you were one of those you should be ashamed of yourselves!!! Would you behave that way to your local water board if there was a burst pipe in your neighborhood?
So all in all a great weekend THANK YOU!!!!!! We will be back again and again and again so keep up the good work!
Stayed at this hotel for a romantic valentines break and i must say i was a little disappointed with the room i was given - it was one of their more expensive 4 poster bedrooms and turned out to be at the back of the building with a fire exit at a window. I was also dissapointed withe the size of the room - smaller than i had expected. We didn't complain because we got the room last minute and we new the hotel was fully booked.
However, the food was exceptional - both for breakfast and evening meals. Also, the pool was clean and although small, was big enough as there wasn't many people using it. Also, the bed was really comfy. In addition to this, the staff at the hotel were all really nice.
Overall, we had a fantastic stay even though the room was disappointing. I would stay there again, and would reccomend it to any couple wanting a relaxing, romantic stay, but would ask for another room!
Clean, warm and decent food!
I have read all of the reviews on this hotel and many were bad, but we decided to try it anyway. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was good and there was plenty of it, and the room was clean and warm. It didn't smell moldy as some people have claimed. It was our first break away with our 6 month old daughter and it was great, really relaxing. A great base for exploring the lakes!!!
