Newton Stewart is an important market town. It serves as the centre for a large rural area that includes the vast and sparsely populated Galloway
l
There are some interesting buildings like the Bridge of Cree, the Town Hall
which dates to 1800. Nearly opposite is the Galloway Arms Hotel. The Parish Church was built in Gothic in style in about 1840 and not far away is the town's Museum situated in an old church.
We didn't have much time to explore this town as we spent most of our time in the forest.
We spent a while in and around Newton Stewart doing practical training when I was a student. For a young man from the semi desert land of Sudan this was the first time to see real forests, dark fragrant areas of light and shade. it was interesting to learn the methods used to extract the felled trees from the forests using horses or tractors.
