Link to Newton Stewart from Glasgow

by nilsbrown1

Hi there

I'm flying into Glasgow airport. Does anyone know how I can reach Newton Stewart from there? I'm not driving so I'm looking for train or coach links. Also what are the prices for the transport?

Thank you very much.

The journeyplanner link on www.travelinescotland.com will sort out options for your particular timings.

www.glasgow-airport-guide.co.uk/transport.html for transport to the city from the airport.

Train from Glasgow Central to Barrhill via Ayr.
www.nationalrail.co.uk for times and prices.

There is a regular bus service to Newton Stewart from Barrhill village, which is a mile from the station, and an occasional bus from Barrhill station. (Service 359).

Also bus 359 direct from Glasgow Buchanan Street. Go to www.stagecoachbus.com and use the search facility (Glasgow and Newton Stewart) to bring up a PDF of the timetable (there aren't many buses).

Stranraer is the nearest big town. I'm pretty confident it has a rail link from Glasgow, because the ferries to Northern Ireland depart from here. Looking on travelinescotland, I see there are hourly buses to Newton Stewart.

Or from the opposite direction, you could catch a train to Dumfries from Glasgow, do a bit of Rabbie Burns sightseeing, then catch a bus from there (buses every 1.5 hours)

According to thetrainline.com, the second option may be better, train tickets far cheaper (around £20 return to Dunfries) and service more frequent.

"under construction"

Newton Stewart is an important market town. It serves as the centre for a large rural area that includes the vast and sparsely populated Galloway
l
There are some interesting buildings like the Bridge of Cree, the Town Hall
which dates to 1800. Nearly opposite is the Galloway Arms Hotel. The Parish Church was built in Gothic in style in about 1840 and not far away is the town's Museum situated in an old church.
We didn't have much time to explore this town as we spent most of our time in the forest.

We spent a while in and around Newton Stewart doing practical training when I was a student. For a young man from the semi desert land of Sudan this was the first time to see real forests, dark fragrant areas of light and shade. it was interesting to learn the methods used to extract the felled trees from the forests using horses or tractors.
