BENEDICTS OF BELFAST: A TALE OF 2 ROOMS

by DAO

They should offer 2 room options - Sleep and No Sleep. Well that's what I was offered anyway. I was told to stay here on the recommendation of an ex-boss. This would not be the first time listening to him got me into trouble. When I showed up it looked very nice. I was shown to a room on the back of the building on the second floor. The room was nice. A very big bed sat on beautiful wooden floors. Already I was thinking – that could make noise. My bathroom was good and functional, except for he heated towel rail. Anyway, I went off to explore Belfast for a while by foot. When I returned in the evening I noticed their bar, with its own outside entrance, now had 2 bouncers – on a Sunday night. I went up to my room and could just faintly hear the music form the now nightclub in the hallway on the way to my room. I decided for an early night. As I lay down some guy had come up the nearby stairs form the nightclub. Thump! Thump! Thump! Is what I could hear when the door to the stairs was open. It closed, but the guy’s mouth was shouting at the room opposite to open up in a drunken rat. Nice. Anyway I fell asleep.

Until 11pm.

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!
And people screaming! I could make out every word the DJ shouted over the microphone. They had just turned the volume UP.

And the people near me scraping their bed across their wooden floor.

I finally go t dressed and went to reception. I tried, by shouting, to speak to the receptionist. Yes – the nightclub door was open. I shouted to explain that I had booked 3 days on business and asked for a quiet room. “IS THIS YOUR IDEA OF QUIET!?” I shouted at the receptionist. She couldn’t hear me! Anyway I was promised that I would be upgraded to a quieter room the next day and that the music would cease at midnight. It did. Then I fell asleep.

Until 1am.

BANG! GIGGLE! SCRAPE ! BANG! BANG! WHAT!? LAUGHING !

Yes there was a party in the room next door and more were arriving. I made sure of their room number and rang reception. True to the man’s word he was there in a flash.

BANG ! BANG ! HELLO !?

Yes the people in the room played the old ‘we are not here being drunk and loud’ trick and refused to answer the door. They were quiet now –as they tried to hide. Luckily the man from reception had heard them before he knocked. For several minutes he knocked to no avail. Then he got smart and went downstairs and rang the telephone in the room. The stupid woman in the room answered the phone. I don’t know what the man told her, but the room emptied quickly to running feet and slamming doors.

The next day, very tired at work, I made my way back to the hotel. The new room, on the 3rd and upper floor, was very nice. My bed was soft and wonderful. My room, although facing the road, was silent. I mean silent. I enjoyed my next 2 nights in absolute peace.

It’s a shame that they allow the nightclub to run that loud at night. Get the wrong room and you want to change hotels. Get the right room (more expensive!) and you have a wonderful hotel in the vibrant heart of Belfast.

EUROPA HOTEL - BELFAST: THE MOST BOMBED HOTEL IN EUROPE

by DAO

Thankfully today, the only thing that gets bombed in this hotel now are the guests. With 2 excellent bars, that’s easy to do. The Europa is THE hotel to stay in and be seen at. When Royalty and Diplomats come here, this is where they stay. In my case, my job was kind enough to let me stay. So what is the history? It was opened in July 1971 and was clearly THE luxury hotel in Belfast. The proletarian IRA saw this as just about everything they didn’t like and promptly started setting off bombs in, out and nearby the hotel. Over 30 times they forced re-decorations. Fortunately that’s all they did.

Today it has been massively refurbished and redecorated, without any outside help, to a luxurious finish. The rooms are compact, but full of good things like supersoft beds, great monsoon showers and flat-screen TV’s. Yep, I have pictures of all that!

This 4-star hotel has 240 bedrooms, including the 56 Executive Suites. If you simply must work, you also get WiFi internet access.

Each room has:
International direct dial telephone
Room service available (7.00am - 2.00am)
Tea & coffee making facilities
Trouser presses or irons & ironing boards
Hair dryer
Laundry & dry-cleaning available
Fantastic soap & shampoos in your bathroom
Lots of huge fluffy white towels

Please note: The Gym facilities are elsewhere and keep short hours, ask for details

You get:
• A great nights sleep
• A fantastic buffet breakfast that will fill you up for the day
• You are in THE hotel!
• Great lounge bar that’s a real nightspot
• Free newspapers, magazines and maps in the lobby

Aaranmore Lodge: Comfortable B&B

by Dabs

I picked Portrush to stay in because it would either be on the way to our next destination in Donegal or if the weather wasn't cooperating that we'd be able to go back and see what we missed along the Antrim Coast. This was the only B&B that we stayed in on this trip, I *love* the idea of B&Bs but don't like the worry of having to get somewhere by a particular time in order to check in so I tend to book hotels instead. It turned out to be a good choice of location as the weather was miserable when we arrived at the Giant's Causeway on the 1st day. It's not too far from the Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle or the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge.

This was the most expensive room we had on this trip although not a totally fair comparison as this was the only one that included breakfast, Portrush has a very short season so I imagine the rates reflect that as we were still sort of in season. July-August is Portrush's high season but September still sees a fair number of visitors and our B&B had most of it's rooms filled. We paid £70 for the 1 night on booking.com, the rate included breakfast and was cancellable up to 2 days prior to arrival. There is free parking in the front of the B&B, town is close enough to walk to.

The room was very comfortable and clean, it wasn't lavishly decorated like some B&Bs but that certainly didn't bother me. We had room 2 and it was quiet at night. There was a TV in the room and free internet access on a computer in the hallway. The owner even offered for us to call back home as she said they had free calls.

The bathroom was fine with a shower, plenty of hot water and little packets of shampoo and soap, there was a hair dryer in the room.

The breakfast was quite nice, I had a full Irish breakfast with eggs, bacon, Irish soda bread, toast, tea and juice. They also had cereal out and I'm sure would have offered anything in their kitchen.

What really sets this place apart though was the congeniality of the hosts, from the free internet to the offer of free calls and to drive us to town to find dinner, you can tell they were most eager to have their guests have a pleasant stay.

Premier Inn Carrickfergus: Good value UK chain

by Dabs

I booked the Premier Inn Carrickfergus so that we could spend the day in Belfast and then not have to drive too far that evening but still be in a good position to start driving along the Antrim coast the next morning. Carrickfergus doesn't have much else to recommend it other than a castle situated right along the coastal drive, all we did was stay here. Parking was free, the hotel is within walking distance of Carrickfergus Castle and also a large Sainsbury grocery store.

We booked a cancellable room on booking.com for £55 ($86US) for the one night including taxes, breakfast was not included in the rate although there is an onsite restaurant where you can get breakfast.

This was the first Premier Inn that I've stayed in, the room was a perfectly adequate place to sleep for a night and definitely a step above the Ibis chain. The room had a small TV with 5 basic channels and tea service like all of the hotels we stayed at in Ireland and England. We had a queen bed plus an extra twin bed. Our room had a view of the water

The bathroom had soap in a dispenser on the wall, the water pressure was very low. There was a hair dryer in one of the bedroom drawers.

Causeway Hotel: A Great Place to Stay

by WulfstanTraveller

The Causeway Hotel was extremely reasonable and very attractive. It is also located above beautiful countryside near the Giant's Causeway, so it is wonderfully scenic, as well as misty and brisk, making for a nice stay in the warm hotel. It has a great pub serving really good food and the breakfast room is beautiful. It also serves excellent breakfast, including a full Ulster Fry complete with really good potato farls, which are otherwise pretty hard to find.

It's an interesting old building, although there is a newer wing. I think that the basic structure is over 150years old, although it has been modified over the years. It has a great pub/restaurant serving good pub food and an elegant breakfast room with tall windows offering nice views outside. It's also in the immediate vicinity of the Giant's Causeway, making it very handy.

We were looking for a b&b near Bushmills, with an ocean view, and this was ideal! A fantastic sunset!
Really helpful hosts, and great breakfast...all you could ask for!
