Passport Control

by TA7DS

In a few days, I fly from Heathrow to Belfast, take the train to Dublin and fly back to London. Will my (non-european) passport be stamped. Not getting it stamped would be a disappointment (Schengen's already killed a lot of fun)

:)

Re: Passport Control

by amandajayne81

We went to London first, then Wales, then ferry to Waterford (Ireland) then train to Belfast and back to Dublin. In total we got a stamp for our first arrival in London (UK) and then a stamp when we arrived in Ireland off the ferry. I don't remember any passport checks at all between the Dublin and Belfast section. It was just a day trip. Northern Ireland/Wales are in the UK so your stamp for England counts for that as well. Good luck getting an Irish one but I don't like your chances. Schengen ruined a lot of my fun too!

If you have to go thru passport control, you can always ask if they can stamp your passport or not. I was told that the passport control agents aren't allowed to stamp EU passports so maybe you'll be lucky.

Re: Passport Control

by betska

A long time ago, but when I caught a train from Belfast to Dublin, there was no-one checking anything.

Re: Passport Control

by leics

As far as I am aware there are no border checks for passports/documentation between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, nor have there been for a considerable length of time. The two countries share a 'common travel area': not Schengen, but a similar idea.

Re: Passport Control

by marielexoteria

I thought that Northern Ireland wasn't on Schengen since it's part of the UK and the UK isn't????

Re: Passport Control

by leics

No, neither country is in Schengen. I said it was 'similar' to Schengen, not that it is Schengen.

:-)

Re: Passport Control

by marielexoteria

Oops, my bad. I misunderstood your last line :-)

Re: Passport Control

by Waoife

Assuming Heathrow is your first stop, your passport will be stamped there. You won't get a stamp in Belfast as you'll still be in the UK. Aslo, you won't get a stamp when you go to Dublin as there's no passport control between North and South here.

Are you flying back to Heathrow? If so, there will probably be no passport stamp then either as flights from Ireland arrive into "domestic arrivals" and there is no passport control to go through.

Re: Passport Control

by TA7DS

Thanks for the posts VTers.

Really? I did not know flights from Ireland arrive at domestic terminal?

What if I fly from Heathrow to Dublin first, will I see an 'Others Line' and the zoom through 'EU line'

Re: Passport Control

by leics

Passport queues are to do with your passport, not from where you have flown.

Signs will say 'EU passports'/'Other passports' or similar.

Re: Passport Control

by Waoife

Leics is right - if you fly from Heathrow to Dublin then you'll have to go through passport control in Dublin as normal and go through the "non EU" channel. Don't ask me why they don't check passports of passengers from Ireland arriving in Heathrow!!! I haven't flown through Heathrow in over a year but did it at least monthly for several years so presume things haven't changed in that time.

Re: Passport Control

by TA7DS

Good to know. So I'll fly into Dublin first, and just follow the Non-EU line.

Seems a bit weird though - I mean if someone in Ireland who needed visa for the UK but didn't have one??

Thanks!!

Re: Passport Control

If they needed a visa for the UK they would also need one for Ireland.

Travel Tips for Belfast

Tea, Toilet, Telephone

by Traveldi

Tea
Coffee Bars are springing up daily, I like going to "The Streat" in the Odyssey for good 15's or dropping into Clements or The Apartment in town, sit upstairs for good views of the City Hall.
Cafe Aero at is nice cut through Boots or The Arcade on Royal Avenue and it's in that Street.

Toilet
I have to let you know this important info, because there is a distinct lack of Public Toilets in Belfast. When you got to go, you got to go.
So if you are in the City Centre. The Store Marks and Spencer at The start of Royal Avenue has toilets at the top of the store for customers. Also in Castle Court there are public toilets, these are normally in a queue situation, so duck into Debenhams dept store on the first floor at the back. Or of course Cafes, Mc Donalds... will be an option. The Odyssey Complex that I have mentioned before has good facilities.

Telephone
Quite a lot of Public telephones around.

The Mourne Mountains

by Catspjm

The highest mountains in Northern Ireland are the Mournes. Situated about 70km from Belfast they are well worth a visit and provide an excellent day out for a gentle walk or some serious climbing for the more adventurous.
Slieve (Irish for mountain) Donard is the highest peak. At just under 3000 feet it is smaller than Everest, so oxygen is seldom required. However yaks and sherpas are available for hire in the general area. Be sure to establish a price before setting off on the trek and it is wise to check that you are actually being rented a yak, as opposed to a large dog disguised in a fur coat with horns sellotaped to it’s head. Caveat emptor, I believe is the expression. You have been warned…

The Parlour

by kranstonakov about The Parlour

This is a student hangout which is pretty much packed out every night of the week and weekends. The music is terrible, you get plastic glasses and the pints are poor. Embarrasing wine list and bog standard food. But hey, its for students! They don't deserve any better! If your young and over in Belfast for a few days, it might be a good place to meet the opposite sex, but if your a bit more cultured and experienced traveller, this place will not appeal to you. If you want to meet Belfast locals this again is not the place to go as students in Belfast are mainly from rural communities around the country, who have less of an idea about belfast than most tourists. Its not my cup of tea, but why not make your own mind up. Student wear - Cheap high steet fabrics -

European

by Catspjm about Shu

On a good night you will get the best food and always the best service in Belfast in this restaurant.
The staff is extremely knowledgeable about both the food and wine and always manages a perfect balance between friendliness and utter professionalism. If its on try the Venison (I can hear the hisses and boos coming from some camps already) if not take pot luck with confidence and enjoy

The Botanic Gardens

by diamond_skies

The Botanic Gardens, located next door to the main Queen's University buildings, is a lovely place for a walk on a sunny day. Not far from the main entrance, you will see a small tree in a cage. This is Belfast's wollemy pine and is caged for it's own protection as they are so rare.

Further on, you can't miss the gorgeous Victorian Palm House, a precursor to the glass house at Kew Gardens. Nearby is the Victorian Tropical Ravine, which houses many tropical species including bananas and orchids. At the back there are 3 ponds with fish in them - always an attraction for the youngsters!

The hours of opening vary with the season and are posted just inside the gate (for the gardens), and on the doors of the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine.
