Mrs Cattrell is one of the nicest landladies we have met and you just can't beat the location of the guesthouse. After leaving the main road, drive through a forest populated with roe deer to a large house beside Lough Macnean. There are four rooms, each with en suite bathrooms and a glass door leading out to a patio with a view of the lough. There is no noise, except the birds singing, the water lapping and the wind in the trees. Well, occasionally, you will hear the kettle boil and Mrs Cattrell telling you there are freshly made biscuits (cookies) in the front room.
All for GBP22 per person a night - it doesn't get better than this.
Beside the view and the fabulous hospitality, there is the breakfast. Mrs Cattrell always remembers that I like a bowl of porridge and GF doesn't like eggs. The breakfast room over looks the lough and it can be mesmerising to sit and sip your orange juice and watch a heron skim low over the water.
Mrs Cattrell will tell you all the best places to eat and it is down to her that we have enjoyed eating at Macnean Bistro and the Courthouse - two excellent restaurants nearby. The drive to the Courthouse is worth it - the road is spectacular, especially at sunset.
