For railway enthusiasts, those who seek out unusual hotel settings, or for lovers in search of a fantasy setting, this is perfect. A late Victorian railway station whose the owners have rescued and lovingly restored old Pullman coaches and put them to use as ensuite hotel rooms. You can stay in the station building itself: slightly more spacious but perhaps less glamorous than the coaches.
We stayed in one of the coaches which had been a wreck until a few years back, languishing on a cliff in Cornwall. It is full of exquisite detail from the business cards printed as tickets to the old Pullman interior which cleverly incorporates modern comforts like hairdryers, but retains period detail like luggage racks. Every item in the rooms chosen to fit with its setting, even the elctrical gadgets, like the old radios, look the part.
Breeakfast and drinks are served in the charming vaulted waiting room: the full English was "a best" (there are vegetarian alternatives).
The hotel is in a very quiet rural setting a few miles from the small town of Petworth with its large estate, Petworth House, owned by the National Trust. The house is closed to the public Thursday & Fridays, but open all otehr days. The town itself is pretty for a wander - interesting if you like antique shops (I'm not that much of an antique hunter).
A small portion of the old railway line (now grassed) remains and leads through a scenic railway arch; on our evening stroll small night creatures rustled in the grass and a full moon sailed out over the autumn tree. One of those trips when everythign goes just right...
The hotel doesn't served dinner but there is a pub called Badgers about a mile away (although it was closed for a private party when we stayed) and i am told it does good food at about £20 - £25 per head.
The rooms: £66-£140 per night per room; midweek offers may be available. There is a minimum 2-night stay at weekends in high season.
